I spoke with @chrislhayes.bsky.social about yesterday’s decision in the birthright citizenship case. That this was not a unanimous decision by the Court should mute any inclination to celebrate unreservedly.
The SCOTUS today reaffirmed the guarantee of birthright citizenship. In so doing, it affirms the 1898 SCOTUS decision in Won Kim Ark. United States. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...
Today may change everything. If the conservative majority in the Supreme Court strikes down the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship to give the President or Congress the power to make exceptions, we will be in another country on the other side of the decision’s announcement.
I was at the SCOTUS yesterday to hear decisions. When you can predict who wins before the justices announce the outcome just by knowing the identity of the parties & when 6-3 is the default setting,the system is broken.You could palpably feel the diminishment of the Court’s legitimacy & position.
Yes I did. For every office. If you haven’t voted yet, there’s still time. VOTE.
Also let me recommend historian Annette Gordon Reed’s “On Juneteenth” for your summer reading list. I felt vindicated reading that Reed, a Texan, always saw Juneteenth as a Texas celebration. Her dive into the complicated history of Texas, slavery, integration & this holiday is riveting.
It’s Juneteenth. On June 19, 1865, Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston Island & issued General Order No. 3. It announced that “all slaves are free.” This story of this one event was commemorated through the diaspora of Black Americans for more than 150 years before becoming a national holiday.

I salute Judge Edward Chen for this. He hits the nail on the head. Because the future of the profession is in peril in my view, as a generation of young lawyers witness the unethical and shameful conduct of far too many of their experienced and “successful” supervising attorneys.
A great day in Montgomery, AL as thousands gathered under the theme “All Roads Lead to the South” - a rally to mobilize awareness & action in opposition to southern states racial gerrymandering to dismantle majority Black congressional districts after the SCOTUS decision in Louisiana v Calláis.
Feeling overwhelmed with all of this. LISTEN. Another Louisiana resident (Marshawn is the only name we have) testifies against the state’s racial gerrymander, speaking truth to power up and down the hearing room and predicts how this story will end. Speak your truth, fight and believe.
