Radio Silence

I clutch at what the borders of the paper contain. The writing on the reverse side presses through like a hidden meaning. I don't turn it over. I don't read the words. I already know what they say.

Yesterday hasn't stayed put. It pours into each day the way sunlight finds every crack in a room.

We don't have a name for this. The habit of never letting go of a string. The fear that if we finally loosen our grip, we'll discover nothing was ever tied to the other end—that our imagination was the tether all along.

And yet I keep holding on.

Because without the weight of faith and love and desperation, I think I would float clean away.

A station bleeding through the dark.

The Listener

At ninety-two, Tacey Swash lived behind a tackle shop near the tourist beach on the Duwamish. She was said to have the softest, most soothing, and most powerful voice ever to fall upon the ears of the men of earth and the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

Tacey spoke so quietly that people leaned closer, and that was the problem.
When they got too close, they could hear their own thoughts loud as the storm alarm bells.

Old sailors claimed she carried every conversation she'd ever heard folded into the lining of her coat. Others swore a colony of ghosts followed her from room to room, whispering corrections. It was said that when she swam, black fish rose from the depths and fed on every word people wished they could take back.

The town depended upon Tacey the way sailors depend upon lighthouses.
From a distance.

She spent most evenings alone on the beach.
The black fish gathered offshore.
The waves landed like ghost whispers.

And somewhere in town, another crowded room was slowly inventing a story.
