I'm a Science Journo & Author: The Stronger Sex (Seal Press/Hachette, 2025) Also: Weightlifter, Ceramic Sculptor, Wild swimmer, Ecstatic Dancer, Trailrunner 🇦🇺🇺🇸 dual citizen Bylines: Nat Geo, WashPo, SciAm (+ pods), my book 👇
I've only had one car crash in 33 years (thus far, I drive a LOT when I have a car, though I'm currently car-free). I careened off the side of a mountain, rolled down the side, and landed on my passenger side in a frozen river in Colorado. Brand-new Xterra. I was fine due to seatbelt BUT 1/3
I've gained a LOT of new followers on a couple other platforms recently (and not too shabby over here either), so I made a little re-intro video here for those who don't know who the heck I am or what I do! (PS. I also do ceramics and ecstatic dance & I'm a dual US and Australian citizen.) #author
It's my half-birthday & what better way to celebrate than a chat with a brilliant immune-systems researcher Marlo Möller on the BBC? We talked abt the strengths of female bodies from POVs of a science journalist & researcher specializing in tuberculosis & other diseases www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w...
Imagine a city SO pathetic they give $$$$$ to grow & support the biggest tech companies on the planet & don't even get them to provide public WiFi? Embarrassing for Seattle (GROW a pair!!) but ditto @amazon and @microsoft.com buncha losers. NO public wifi @wsdot.wa.gov ferry terminal or waterfront.
When a woman LITERALLY leads the research!!! Its still "man made" WTF. I expected better from @carlzimmer.com (unless headline writer overruled him?!) What happened to "human made??"
If you are a writer or media person, find out if you are being plagiarized by AI (AKA In the Weights)! Here's mine. If you go to the site intheweights.com you can also see AI hallucinations about who you are. One of mine says I'm a singer/songwriter! ahahahahahahahahahphelrg.
So thrilled to be part of the next edition!!! #sciencejournalism #sciencewriting
My work in German! A piece I wrote on the strength of the female body's immune system was translated for ZEIT WISSEN magazine, part of @DIE ZEIT a national newspaper in Germany. Love that my work is as well-traveled as I am :) Link to read in comments. #sciencejournalism #germany #womenshealth
Hiked past sunset, past star rise, scared some roos in the bush (apologies!) and just before I got to the end of the track, this! ❤️
FUN! Google-image search of my name shows the following animals (from various stories I've written): Bats; salamanders; cows (on a beach!); wombat; dog; pigs; orangutan; whale shark; lobster; and macaques. Not-animal but notable: FOUR robots! I LOVE ALL THESE GUYS.
I'm CRYING. This is one of the most lovely things anyone has ever said about something I've written.
Looking forward to a great live conversation with Adara Enthaler as part of tomorrow's Sydney Writers' Festival!
You are here sign pointing at this (and you realizing you are in hell):
This is a fun one! South Africa's Fairlady magazine (with Rose Byrne on the cover - love her!) has a feature about my book!
Saying an artist taking inspiration and riffing on another's work in dance is stealing would be like saying "Renoir stole Impressionist dancer paintings from Degas" - artists are always informed by other artists of the time and previous times, and iterating on it, that's art!
I saw a pelican pair at Coledale beach in late Jan! I was freaking out but nobody else seemed to care...
So this happened! Nominated for Best Science Journalist for The Lizzies, the Australian IT Journalism Awards. Happy to say I know almost half the science journos on that list! A great group that I have enjoyed learning from and meeting up with over the past months. PLUS we get to go to a fab party!
Happy Place! (Austinmer Sea Pool south of Sydney.) Sea pools are community built pools (most from the 1930s) in the rock shelves and are fed by waves. They're free to use, have bathrooms & showers & are maintained by local councils. Most coastal towns have them & they are all unique. #australia
Had a chance to visit Cawleys Wildlife Bridge S of Sydney, Australia. Ecologist Kylie Madden showed me around the currently-under-construction site which will accommodate walking, flying, & climbing animals. More on the special arboreal structures designed for those animals soon. #sciencejournalism
March 17th is my next book event! Join me at Ryan's Hotel in Thirroul for a convo with local legend Kate Dezarnaulds! Tickets (free) here: events.humanitix.com/starre-varda...
So, so happy for my science-writing colleague @frogsandstars.bsky.social for WINNING the Emerge Australia Long COVID journalism award for her excellent reporting on this issue. Brava Felicity!! #longcovid #sciencejournalism
Three Scientists Who Said No to Epstein: I'm always curious about what's behind the big stories—who are the people who didn't get involved in horrible crimes or partner with the wrong people? Why not?Jeffrey Mervis dug into it for @science.org www.science.org/content/arti... #epstein #epsteinfiles
So honored to be a part of Wildfemmes photo shoot for HER — An International Women’s Day Portrait Series! Emma was fun to work with (because of course I wanted to get in the water)! Happy International Women's Day from this international woman :) Batik dress made in Ghana by women-owned Osei Duro.
Join me and the v. witty Kate Denarzaulds for a convo hosted by @collinsbooks.bsky.social in Thirroul as I bring The Stronger Sex: What Science Tells Us About the Power of the Female Body to the #Illawarra & #Wollongong area! 17 March at 7pm for a rollicking & wide-ranging conversation abt strength!
Why we do what we do! Loved speaking at @susquehannau.bsky.social university yesterday, the students had such great questions.
My latest pod feature just dropped! The fab Tough Girl Pod! I really love speaking with such amazing women (all have been women so far!) who are putting out these incredibly inspirational pods for other women. It's just a beautiful thing to be a small part of! podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/t...
Most every day now, I just want to cry for humanity. What a bunch of sad, pathetic, scrabbling, sorry beings. Perhaps we are ALL in hell together. I just feel so bad for everyone sometimes, what a cruel experiment we are.
Such a supportive very 1st book event for The Stronger Sex! So glad it was in the city of my birth, Sydney, Australia. Friends, fam & fellow science journalists showed up to hear @biancanogrady.bsky.social ask me smart questions/witness me stumble through it all. #booklaunch #sydney #author
Hi Michael, Took this photo of a dun reflected in water at the beach today (Illawarra area S of Sydney); is what I captured in my photo related to this phenomena? Thought it looked odd/not like other sun reflection photos I've taken.
