It’s been 14 years since a white supremacist entered a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, and opened fire. He shot and killed six Sikh worshippers and wounded three other people. A seventh victim died from complications with his gunshot wounds years later.

Seven years ago today, just hours after the El Paso mass shooting, a man with an assault weapon and a high-capacity magazine opened fire outside of a bar in the Oregon Historic District of Dayton, Ohio. In less than 40 seconds, nine people were shot and killed and 17 others were wounded.

We know all too well what can happen when people who want to do harm get their hands on an assault weapon. The same assault-style rifles that have been used in the deadliest school shootings continue to be used to terrorize communities across the US — including this weekend in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Seven years ago, a white supremacist with an AK-47 and a high-capacity magazine opened fire inside a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. He drove over 600 miles to the border town to target Latinos. Twenty-three people were shot and killed, and 22 others were wounded, most of them Latino.

Two years ago, the family of Victoria Lee, a 25-year-old woman with bipolar disorder, called 911 as she experienced a mental health crisis. They begged for only an ambulance to transport Victoria to a hospital. Instead, police officers responded, broke down the door, and shot and killed her.

It’s been one year since a man with an AR-15 opened fire inside the lobby and 33rd floor of an office building in New York City. In minutes, four people were shot and killed: Aland Etienne, Julia Hyman, Didarul Islam, and Wesley LePatner. One other was shot and wounded.
