During the evening of day 4 #EFP2026 we listened to beautiful homages dedicates to Jane Goodall and Biruté Galdikas. Thanks to Anne Pusey, Michael Wilson and Alison Ashbury for their moving words and slides

Also on day 4 #EFP2026, we had our Animal Culture symposium ... wonderfull presentations! The idea was born during a visit by Claudio Tenny in Lyon last year.

Day 3 #EFP2026 continued with fabulous presentations by students from the Taï Chimpanzee Project talking about chimpa zee self- medication and leaf clipping context variability across the four communities. Well done to Alphonse and Marine for good presentations.

Day 3 ##EFP2026 started with a fabulous talk by Liran Samuni, co-director of the Taï Chimpanzee Project, comparing social behaviour and cooperation of wild chimpanzees and wild bonobos.

The Taï chimpanzees have featured prominently during the talks of the first day at #EFP2026, showing how long-term data greatly support the research of today. Long lasting field sites are important to answer the big questions.

Here we offer a quantitative and comparative framework distinguishing combinatorial systems from simpler ones. We do so by integrating new work, demonstrating diverse meaning-bearing combinatorial signalling strategies in natural animal communication, into cross-disciplinary theoretical frameworks.

Yesterday, at the same spot the foto was taken almost 40 years ago (see below), a group of researchers of the Taï Chimpanzee Project gathered to send b-day greetings to Sir David Attenborough.

Big congrats to Dr. Tina Petersen for successfully defending her PhD on tool use in chimpanzees at the Univ. of St Andrews with minor revisions. Tina's PhD results on hammer transport in Taï chimpanzees is in preparation for publication. Great work, Tina, and thanks to Josep Call for collaboration.

Leaving the forest after a couple of intense weeks and returning to desk work. During my last week, I had a meeting with all students, research assistants, and interns. Great team we have out there for the season 2025 / 2026. Together with our local field assistants, they will do amazing work.

Day 1 of 5 days of quarantine. Looking forward to seeing the chimpanzees soon.

Today, we are travelling from Guiglo to Taï and hopefully enter the forest to start quarantine. The piste is in a horrible state, and so we are stuck in traffic waiting for a big truck to be pulled out of a huge mud hole.

Leaving Abidjan with a full car of supplies. I started the next part of the jounry this morning. Together with Zoro, Leveda and Blanche, Sidiki and I hit the road to Soubré, for a meeting with Director of Taï National Park.

Arrived in Abidjan with meetings at the office of the newly installed International Research Lab on Chimpanzee and Moneky Protection for Intact Cultures (short IRL 2041 ChiMP4IC - or Chimps for Ivory Coast).

Yesterday, Mathilde Grampp defended successfully her PhD on how social complexity affects signal complexity in a comparison of wild chimpanzees and mangabies in Taï National Park. We are pleased to announce that Dr. MATHILDE GAMPP received a magna cum laude from Leipzig University. Congratulations !

The IRL ChiMP4IC is based at the CSRS in Abidjan and presents an international platform for the research on chimpanzee and monkey behaviour and cognition with the goal to protect them and their natural habitats. It is led by Unit Director, Prof. Inza Koné and Scientific Director, Dr. Roman Wittig.
