I've found this book helps a lot- Color and Light by James Gurney. I'd highly recommend this one if you've never picked it up!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gohei It's called a gohei, a wand used in Shinto rituals. Being a shrine maiden, it's basically part of her equipment. While characters in Touhou are mainly depicted as firing projectiles at one another, she does occasionally use the Gohei as a melee weapon.
