In 1790, the Marquis de Lafayette was in charge of Bastille Prison and entrusted Thomas Paine to deliver the main iron key of the prison to George Washington as a symbol of democracy. Today, the famous Bastille Key is housed at the Washington’s Mount Vernon. See more at thomaspaine.org

English poet William Blake’s undated drawing of Thomas Paine from a manuscript in his Notebook (page 74). In 1792, Blake warned Paine to flee London moments before authorities came to arrest him for treasonous libel over his writings. Paine was tried in absentia and lived forever in exile.
