Not sure I'll read a better book this year, DIVING BOARD by Tomás Downey, translated by Sarah Moses, published last year by @invisibooks.bsky.social It's both realist and irreal. Spare and dense and surreal. Echoes of Julio Cortázar, and Mariana Enríquez but with a unique sensibility and tension.
Yes, The Best Weird Fiction of the Year, Vol. 2 has a new cover. The first iteration was fine, but the art had been used on several books already. I am way behind on this. Still reading. Hope to have a ToC by July and publication in October/November.
This one was very short-lived. Tekeli-li! ran for just 4 issues from 1991 - 1992, edited by Jon B. Cooke out of Rhode Island. It was very good. I still remember a Douglas Clegg story, "Where Flies Are Born," from an issue. @stefandz11.bsky.social might remember this one.
Another magazine I subbed to in the day, Grue. It ran from 1985 - 1999. There were 19 issues, and in 1990 editor Peggy Nadramia won a World Fantasy Award for her work on the magazine. Thanks to Christopher Slatsky for reminding me about this one.
Edited by Eric M. Heideman out of Minneapolis, Tales of the Unanticipated (1986 - 2018) started out as a small zine and grew into an anthology. There were 32 issues/volumes, though later there were 3 or 4 years between some volumes.
I kept hearing about a particular zine, The Horror Show. It ran for 28 issues from 1982 - 1990. It grew in stature that it published top names Dennis Etchison, Poppy Z. Brite, Ramsey Campbell. Edited by David B. Silva—a fine writer—in California. I tracked down a couple issues, eventually.
Today's old zine — Gaslight. It ran for 9 issues from 1992 - 1995. Edited by Melissa Gish, out of Cleveland. Yes, I read a bunch of micro and small press zines in the mid 90's. Many were very uneven, to be sure, but there was an energy to the scene.
More old zines — Eulogy. Info is sketchy, but I believe it ran for 9 issues from 1992 to 1996. Edited by Timothy G. Libby out of Napa, California.
