The Lower Undead Burg is lousy with impish thieves eager to run their serrated blades across the neck of anyone foolish enough not to protect it.

A nightmarish demon from below has clawed its way into the twisting capillaries of the Lower Undead Burg, offering a glimpse of horrors to come before inevitably falling, as always, to the mundane blade.

Faced with the oblivion of the curse, some undead accept their fate and even find some joy in what's left to them.

It is an enviable soul who finds some happiness, at the end of world, in a clump of wet moss.

Dark Souls on CRT continues, finally. I had trouble getting usable photographs of the gargoyles but taking a break and then coming back for round two did the trick, just like a Dark Souls boss fight. (1/2) #crt #gaming #darksouls

Nearing the top of the Undead Parish, the Chosen Undead's eye is drawn by brilliant gold soapstone script, the calling card of a Warrior of Sunlight offering their fighting spirit for jolly cooperation. Moments later, Solaire of Astora enters the darkness like a piercing ray, praising the sun fervently.

Atop the parish, twin gargoyles guard one of Lordran's two Bells of Awakening with unnatural obedience, as if animated by some chthonic puppeteer.

Jolly cooperation overcomes anti-life as two heroes of old are forged in fire and anointed comrades eternal.

While the battle atop rages, Lautrec of Carim slips away from the Parish's holding cell and skulks back to Firelink Shrine to plan his next scheme, surely heinous. His gold armor, once shining, is now dull, corroded, and filthy.

I like this scene where you reach the top of The Wall at the End of The World because it achieves a sense of grandeur with just a camera move, a background animation and a hype music track. ..and I am absolutely not immune to a 'Wanderer above the Sea of Fog' visual reference. (3/3)

Grandia continues! It's been mostly dungeon exploration and combat for a bit, but I have finally recruited a fourth party member, though I suspect only temporarily: the knight Gadwin, who has the fine distinction of being our first adult party member. (1/3) #crt #retrogaming

Justin, Sue and Feena have spent three days climbing The Wall at the End of The World only to immediately fall over the other side of it. Colossal foliage from another age provides a soft landing, but Justin has been knocked unconscious regardless. His eyes are in the back of his head and his tongue is hanging out like roadkill. He looks dead, and Feena suspects the worse before he springs to life.

In search of Sue, Justin and Feena meet the knight Gadwin, who, through a misunderstanding, they come to believe has prepared a Sue stew and eaten her. Justin springs into action with his newly-acquired battle-axe, recklessly attacking a grown, armored man.

Gadwin entertains Justin's righteous fury a bit before putting him in his place and resolving the matter. He is a good-hearted knight who would never eat Sue or any other child. Feena apologizes, embarrassed for suspecting the worst of a stranger.

Gadwin agrees to escort the children in the morning and they enjoy a meal as comrades around a roaring bonfire before turning in.

Brave GunForce 2 Guy jogs along a moving train car, huge rifles in each hand, having just freed a babe from a pole. The prevalence of babes tied to poles in this universe suggests an extremely upsetting material reality. Best not to think about it.

Before our protagonist (GunForce 2 Guy) can reckon with the horrific human trafficking economy that seems to plague his world, a cool giant robot attacks and burninates the countryside!!

After toppling many foes, Kaede Minamoto has come to relish the violence. Sadistic pleasure curls her lips into a smile. Her big red bow, previously mundane fashion, now takes on the appearance of devil horns. She's tired of being nice and just wants to go ape shit.

Feena has barely gotten any sleep while looking after the injured wild boy Ren. She clearly won't make it through the day without a nap of some sort. Her mouth is hanging open like a zombie, that's how tired she is.

Mysterious wild boy Ren has the hugest green eyes you've ever seen and a single pointy tooth sticking out of his mouth. He must be protected at all costs.

Flustered by both the heat and the incompetence of her subordinates, Nana of the Bloody Rose Squad blows her lid in the locker room, giving those imbeciles an earful. She seems to be wearing flesh-colored underwear. If not, I guess we're just looking at a naked lady here, aren't we.

After Justin 'accidentally' spies on the Garyle ladies while they were changing clothes, Feena gives him some sass, which is much less than he deserves, if you ask me. You're the closest thing to an adult here, Feena, and you need to step up and teach that young men how to be respectful of people's privacy.

Grandia continues to be incredible. I'm getting further into the combat system and my two takeaways are that the Earth "Diggin'" spell is GREAT and the "Critical" attack command is completely worthless. Can any Grandia experts confirm or deny these initial findings? (1/2) #crt #retrogaming

Exploring the Dom Ruins, Justin, Sue and Feena come face to face with Ganymede, a fearsome giant turtle beast that wields its extendable, crested head like a flail, knocking them to the ground.

After plundering the Dom Ruins of its ancient secrets, our heroes rescue a small wild boy from the misty forest and nurse him back to life at Feena's house. The next morning, all four of them are immediately captured by the villainous Garlyle Forces and marched off to prison. This boy, it seems, is special.

After a lengthy sequence in which Justin escapes from prison, is caught and re-imprisoned and then escapes again, he springs companions Sue and Feena and then the mysterious wild boy. Grateful, the boy grants them some disgusting acorns. Choking them down out of courtesy, our heroes find their physiology rapidly re-written to allow them to understand this special boy's special language. Some light vomiting occurs.

During the escape, brave Feena squares off with Nana of the Bloody Rose Squad and they engage in a beautiful and deadly dance of death. Equally matched, they almost seem like two sides of the same coin.

Axe-master Gillius Rockhead, descendant of legendary hero Gillius Thunderhead, delivers a shocking dropkick to sword-master Milan Flare, who is also descended from a legendary hero, suggesting an overarching theme. She blocks, grimacing from the short king's immense might.

In a sweltering boiler room, hunky barbarian Kain Blade and good-humored inventor Panchos have removed most of their clothes and are swinging large phallic symbols at each-other in a sweaty mating ritual.

I always dip into Darkroot to grab the Wolf Ring and beat the Moonlight Butterfly before facing the Gargoyles. Provides a nice chunk of souls to upgrade my weapon with. And I love the Moonlight Butterfly. What the hell even is that? Very weird, very Demon's Souls. (2/2) #crt #gaming #darksouls

Outside the Undead Parish, a giant, unmovable gate bars entry to the ominous Sen's Fortress. The jovial adventurer Siegmeyer of Catarina rests outside, perplexed by its mysteries.

A demon lurks just underneath Andre's workshop, blocking the path to Darkroot Garden. Some tortured creature, born of stone, blind, angry, cursed.

Beyond the Parish, Darkroot Garden welcomes undead into its sickly sweet embrace. Time ceases to flow, the mind swirls and phantoms dance in the moonlight.

Within the intoxicating fog of Darkroot, fantastic creatures appear, as if descending upon beams of moonlight. Are they mundane, or manifestations of the psyche?

Dark Souls on CRT continues, into the Undead Parish. I really like the main Parish room with the pews and statuary. It feels like a place that people do things in, which is a rare feat for video game environments, as boring as it sounds. (1/2) #crt #gaming #darksouls

A giant armored boar guards the approach to the Undead Parish, skewering intruders with serrated tusks. Small arms cannot penetrate its armor head-on, all but requiring a clever posterior approach.

The Parish itself, once a holy site and community center, has been desecrated. Parishioners long hollow are enthralled by a cruel sorcerer on some profane mission. A towering statue of the mother looks down and sees only sorrow.

Though the Parish Belfry beckons, just nearby rests a vital bonfire and an even more vital ally.

Stationed at the crossroads of the Undead Parish, Darkroot Garden and Sen's Fortress, Andre of Astora tirelessly smiths weapons for meager undead, encouraging them to grow and achieve their true potential.

After whipping a kraken into submission and sinking the ghost ship it haunted, Feena welcomes Justin and Sue into her home on the new continent and treats the children to a meal by the fire, all cozy-like.

The coziness is sundered by treachery! The president of the Adventurer's Club, a loathsome turd, kidnaps Feena, intending to marry her against her will. His amoral henchman, the swift boxer Chang, happily beats up the children-- until they strike back and free Feena from clammy incel clutches.

Treasure Hunter Ruka Hetfield (no relation to the Metallica front-man, I assume) dashes through a shaded forest, roasting enemy soldiers alive with a handheld flamethrower. She should have went ballistics in this instance, to minimize the risk of a forest fire, I think.

Ruka takes on a goddamn tank with nothing but roller blades on her feet and a dream in her heart. It looks all the world like she's about to grind on the tank's gun like Tony Hawk but, alas, such things must remain in the world of fantasy.

Stalwart companion to all Solaire of Astora gazes at the incandescent horizon, burning with reverence for the sun and its glory. Call upon him, he bids, for jolly cooperation.

A grinning Red Drake roosts atop the Undead Burg, roasting its inhabitants unchallenged, preventing access to the Undead Parish. A fearsome foe, but easily outsmarted.

A bonfire and a statue of the mother provide brief respite on the path to the parish. The mother holds her babe close and the Chosen Undead snuggles up to the warmth of the fire in kind.

An exiled Black Knight of Gwyn stalks the path to the Parish, bereft of thought, animated only by a dull instinct and a forgotten charge. Old glories still burn, beyond death and hollowing.

Feena's bullwhip cracks the air and slices into squid flesh. She's in her element.

Before leaving home on a life-changing two-disc adventure, young hero Justin adds his own picture to the line of family photos on his mother's wall and pledges to make his father proud-- by becoming an even greater adventurer!

Justin's mother Lilly, though approving of her son's ambitions, is still saddened to see her boy set out on his own and gives him (and the player) one last concerned mom look.

Despite Justin's attempts to ditch her, Sue stows away aboard the ship to the new world and is immediately caught by the crew. As punishment, and to appease the Gods of the Sea, she and Justin are press-ganged into service, resulting in an annoying manual labor minigame-- a PS1 JRPG staple.

The children's labor is thankfully interrupted by the arrival of the Greatest Adventurer in the World, the effervescent Feena, who becomes fast friends with Sue in particular, bonding over their shared interest in dunking on impetuous boys.

Despite Juri's fiery assault, the unbeatable ninja Kazuma remains unshaken. One could more easily swat the sun from the sky than reduce this demon's life bar to zero.

The hidden recesses of Lordran hide many strange creatures, including the glittering Crystal Lizard, a rare game animal prized for its use in blacksmithing. Any Undead, Chosen or not, jumps at the opportunity to bag one.

A watchtower on the edge of the burg holds a dire watchman, a mindless knight of old serving a command he can scarcely recall. As long as Havel the Rock remains, none shall pass.

Demons from the chaos below penetrate higher and higher into Lordran, threatening the realm of the Gods themselves. A mighty Taurus Demon treads the Undead Burg, unchallenged and terrible.

Demons, though fearsome, are born of the dark and thus vanquished by the power of the sun.

The Estus Flask, an Undead Favorite, carries within it the nurturing fire of the sun, provided so graciously by the bonfires of Lordan. Estus does not restore humanity, but prolongs life, still.

The Undead Burg, one of many long-abandoned residential zones in lower Lordan, is now the hunting grounds of a Red Drake. Its hollow inhabitants can offer no resistance, and certainly no monarchy is left to maintain a semblance of order.

Some of the Burg's inhabitants cling to their humanity, desperately performing a vague memory of themselves.

The Chosen Undead, too, is guided by instinct, drawn to fire, always seeking it. Something within her, and before her, yearns deeply.
