I love MR James, but don’t really have anything in the way of a special book. This late 1940s collected edition has a black-and-white card dust jacket. What intrigued me is that it is published by Edward Arnold in the UK, but the spine has a sticker on it for St Martins, NY. @drmjones.bsky.social
I regularly marvel at Edith Alice Cubitt’s witty “A Musical Tragedy” that probably definitely inspired Doyle’s Dancing Men. Pretty dark for a youngster: “The Proposal, The Refusal, Despair, And.., The End”

I finally got to the bottom of where Dorothy Bowers is buried, and thanks to the volunteers at findagrave.com I have a photo too! She is buried at Hereford Cemetery.
This volume was labeled ‘white company’ but has three stories bound in and includes their beautiful covers from Newnes Sixpenny editions.
Here's a funny one - Doyle advocating tea as a doctor with a slightly different spelling in 1885/6: A CONNOR DOYLE Esq. M.D. C.M., Southsea: "The Royal Bengal Tea appears to me to possess less tannin and to be more suited to the use of dyspeptic patients than any of which I have experience".
