Switch to electric is key to a healthy future

Re: “Unreliable electricity makes gas necessary” (July 20).

As a Bay Area high school student, I care about the future my generation will inherit. That is why I was disappointed that Marcia Friss ignored one of the biggest issues: clean air. Air pollution is not abstract. It affects the air we breathe, the number of unhealthy, smog-filled days that keep us indoors and our long-term health. The Bay Area Air District estimates that reducing pollution from gas furnaces and water heaters could prevent up to 85 premature deaths and 15,000 asthma attacks each year in our region.

Affordability concerns are valid, but rebates, exemptions and flexible implementation can address them. California has also invested heavily in battery storage, helping make the electric grid more reliable. These concerns should encourage better, more efficient implementation, not abandonment of the rules.

Air quality must be a priority, not an afterthought. We all deserve clean air and a healthy future.

Consumers need utility reform, not gas pollution

Re: “Regulating appliances only makes life harder” (July 20).

Fred Guttmann is right about one thing: California electricity rates are too high. But that’s a utility problem, not a reason to keep burning gas. Natural gas prices are rising too, and maintaining California’s aging gas pipeline system will become more expensive as fewer people use it. Meanwhile, solar, wind, battery storage and highly efficient heat pumps are making clean energy more affordable and reliable. California’s expanded battery storage has already helped prevent blackouts during recent heat waves.

Gas appliances also come with hidden costs. Gas stoves release nitrogen dioxide and benzene into our homes, increasing asthma risk, especially for children. The Bay Area Air District estimates that reducing pollution from gas furnaces and water heaters could prevent up to 85 premature deaths and 15,000 asthma attacks each year. We need utility reform and cleaner energy, not more pollution.

Capital is driving (or chasing?) the transition: Markets are stepping in, differentiating winners and losers as the shift from fossil fuels to renewables gains ground where the economics already work.
Physical risk is here now: Extreme weather is already costing companies billions, pushing investors to apply geospatial analytics and assess exposures at the asset level before risks cascade into systemic shocks.
Carbon markets are maturing: International trading frameworks are emerging, with integrity and cooperation key to unlocking private capital — and likely to dominate discussions heading into COP30.
