No original pictures today, just two drawings of Betty Boop, based on Grim Natwick's animation of her for the 1930 short, Mysterious Mose. (If you're wondering about the nose and ears - Betty was originally an anthropomorphic dog, who became fully human over a few cartoons).

Betty Boop, from the chest up, one hand to her face, looking shocked. Although ostensibly still a dog character, she's basically human Betty but with a small black nose and droopy ears (which would evolve into earrings). This is the early 30s when Betty's appearance changed from short to short, sometimes within the same short. The fluidity is wonderful.

Betty now smiling and facing to the left, but more or less the same as the last picture. Both pictures are from the same scene, where she performs the song Mysterious Mose. The side parting in her hair is always visible - if she looks the other way, as she does between these pictures, the parting simply flips over to the visible side.

Another new picture with a sort-of hare.

Ink drawing with pencil colours on light green paper. In the middle, a rather abstract, slightly anthropomorphic hare sits down, back legs arched out in front, and front legs acting as arms (and ending with rather human hands too). A red bow tie floats in front of the hare's neck. The hare's head is a bit like an upside-down bottle - flat on top (apart from long ears) and quite wide but tapering away to a thin neck. The front of its head looks almost as if the very front had been cleanly sliced away, revealing nothing. Well, nothing except a vivid red beam of light, pouring straight ahead out of the would-be face and out of the picture. The hare's hands are raised as if holding the beam straight. Two small green circles seem to be the hare's eyes, which send a smudgy green shadow a little distance into the redness. Similar red beams shoot out of each ear, and out of the top of the picture. There is a simple background of a line to represent the horizon, a little fading darkness just above this and there leafless trees. However, this is all on the left of the hare and does not carry on, on the other side.

New picture.... right there... look down a bit.

Ink drawing with pencil colours on red paper. No background, just the red. Sat in front of us is a rather abstract and angular hare, spindly back legs and one front leg on the ground. He looks at us - his head is quite long and tube like and his face is right up at the top - like a little white mask with blue shining eyes and red lips. The leg that isn't on the ground is raised up and ends with a rather human hand, holding a lit cigarette. The hare's inner ears are striped with different shades of pink, red and white. The hare's pack of cigarettes and lighter are on the ground and, in front of it, a massive pint glass - one of the old fashioned ones with the handles. The pint is a dark amber topped off with a white head.

New picture:

Ink drawing with pencil colours on white paper. A thin, hare/rabbit/humanlike creature runs across an open, flat landscape, looking behind it. It's head has a slightly upside-down bottle look about it, with blank eyes and expressionless lips. One of its ears comes out of the top of its head, the other ear comes out of the top of the first ear. In its arms it carries a treasure chest. The creature's arms are very flat against the chest and look more like they've been painted onto it. The one leg that's touching the ground has a small circle round it (on the ground) which then leads to a pattern of ever-widening circles, coloured in this sequence: blue, pink, yellow, orange and white. The strips of wood that make up the treasure chest are also coloured like this. In the background - some misty hills with the same colour pattern and a thin black fence that runs right across the picture but with a gap either side of the rabbit thing.

As promised earlier... a picture of a sheep.

Ink drawing with grey coloured pencil. A black and white picture of a sheep, stood pointing right but head turned to look at us. It is a slightly abstract sheep with a long, narrow head and large body. Scribbly black shading to suggest wooliness. On top of the sheep we see two small hills supporting a few trees in silhouette, above which hover two small clouds and a sun.

1993. My art teacher, Mrs Davenport, who I later realised was the best teacher I had, looked at my drawings & said, "hmm. I think you'd like this." Lent me a Dali book. 1st picture - that one below. A giraffe just calmly wandering into the background ON FIRE. That giraffe kind of changed everything.

A painting made by Salvador Dali in 1937. A low horizon, dark brown open landscape and a huge deep blue sky. Dominating the foreground from top to bottom is a woman in a blue dress, with a red, featureless head. She has drawers coming out of her left leg and one just below her breasts. And then, not even really drawing attention to itself, there's a giraffe right near the edge of the picture, in the middle distance, long neck and back aflame. It seems fine with the situation.

My favourite Spice Girl? Trixie Firecracker. She existed for slightly under four minutes and then drove off into a desert horizon.

I've been watching Black Narcissus and... I'm quite surprised, and impressed, that I found a moment from an almost eighty year old film quite so unsettling. She just throws open the door and - those eyes! Fucking hell!

Kathleen Byron as Sister Ruth. She opens a door and steps out into the ceaseless winds, staring. Her skin is sickly pale, her hair blows dramatically and her eyes look like she's possessed - the whites of her eyes are almost supernaturally white.

I don't know of how much interest this is, but I wanted to do it anyway - here are all Art Things used in my pictures. Details in the alt text :)

A5-ish sized yellow Coca Cola tin to keep everything in, in a Pop Art way, or something. 106 coloured pencils which are the contents of three boxes from WHSmith - all the colours of the rainbow and the ones that aren't allowed in the rainbow as well. One Ghostbusters pencil which I guess I lost around 1989 and which my dad found behind a cabinet a couple of years ago - I like that art connection to my childhood. Three black ink pens, 0.5 tip. One black ink pen, 0.2 tip. One black ink brush pen. One white ink pen, 0.8 tip. A box of Tombow 8900 HB pencils. A small silver pencil sharpener from wherever. An eraser from a pack of ten off Amazon (sorry), a poker chip - really not sure where that came from, but it's handy for suns and suchlike. And under all this, an A3 drawing board from Hobbycraft.

The three huge banks of clouds right at the back have been outlined in ink and coloured: the nearest one is white, the one behind is gold and the one behind that is light blue. The front two clouds cast very straight shadows onto the cloud behind them, as if they are gigantic cardboard cut-outs.

The sides of the cliff are now a kind of gold with turquoise shading, and the whole surface of the cliff top has a scribbly light blue pattern. Anything that can cast a shadow is casting a long blue one to the left. All that's left to do: clouds - and there are some gargantuan ones pencilled in.

Horizon houses & trees silhouetted in black, as with the tiny figures at the cliff edge. The TV is inked in, and blue with yellow speakers and dials; on screen: The Clavioline Carter Show. The picnic blanket has been tartanned with blue and yellow stripes. The giant flowers' huge petals are either light blue or yellow, each with three flecks of brown.

A few more things pencilled in on the horizon, more trees and a couple of buildings. In the middle distance, four gigantic versions of tiny flowers from our garden, two seen either side of the main focus. Next to the woman, a TV set had appeared: rectangular on the right side but curved on the left, like a capital D the other way round, and a bit elongated. Two tiny tiny tiny people are stood at one of the cliff edges.

It is aaages since I read DC Comics. I was thinking of getting back into them, which led me to dig these out. From 2011 to 2016, Scott Snyder wrote Batman while Greg Capullo drew it, and I think it remains one of the greatest runs of comics ever.

Many copies of the monthly Batman comic, from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's run. In fact, I laid all 51 issues out and then found I couldn't really photograph them all without falling off the bed and dying embarrassingly.

The dog has now been coloured brown, has blue eyes and has been given some blue shading. The cliff edges have now all been inked in, as has the outline of the picnic blanket. All pencil lines have been erased, except the houses in the distance and the line on the blanket where it goes over a cliff edge, so I know where to shade it to.
