Alicia laughed, a sound that made Lucia’s stomach feel as if it were flipping upside down. She couldn’t help but laugh along with her. As the laughter died down, Lucia found herself sitting closer to Alicia than she had been. Alicia was looking at her, a small smile on her face.

“Y’know, Lucia… You look more beautiful than the forest tonight.” Alicia said, a sensual tone to her voice that Lucia hadn’t dared to hope she’d ever hear from her.

Lucia, not missing a beat, leaned in and kissed Alicia, who immediately returned it just as fiercely. Maria placed her hands on Alicia’s shoulders, shoving her to the ground.

“W-well then… didn't expect this…” Alicia said, blushing brightly.

Lucia grinned, climbing atop her.

“Me neither.” She continued kissing her.

Ladiziar ended up in a sea of cubicles, all hastily abandoned in the panic of the lockdown. She keyed her comm unit, “HighBird, this is Songbird. I’ve been compromised, and the target has fled to a secure location called the Executive Vault on the lowest floor of the building. I don’t know how to get there. Please advise.”

After a moment, the static muffled voice of Helolak Vanderbrind came through, <Songbird, HighBird. Schematics show that access to the Executive Vault is only possible through the CEO’s office.>

Ladiziar groaned, “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me…”

<Ain’t kidding, Songbird. I don’t usually make jokes during ops.>

“Just… Tell me what I need to do. There's got to be some sort of alternative access.”

<Hold on a moment.>

Ladiziar heard distant voices shouting. This room wasn’t going to be empty for long.

“Sure, sure, Ms. ‘Forced Compliance Automaton’.” Lolanene said, derisively.

Arlitia smiled, “The Intigrelt Forced Compliance Automation is designed for non-lethal crowd control with minimal physical harm. The Intigrelt Human Interface Harness was designed as a purely benevolent technology, intended to help those who are disabled lead fruitful lives. The Intigrelt Organic Will Suppression System was again, designed as a purely non-lethal crowd control system. I will admit, we seem unsettling, or even evil at first glance, but you simply haven’t had the right experience with our corporation.”

“You conduct unethical research at secret blacksites.” Niarith said, “Don’t pretend you’re something you’re not.

On the wall was a massive painted portrait of a gorgeous woman with long, wavy blonde hair and beautiful green eyes. She wore strange makeup that looked like sparkling silver tears streaming from her eyes. On her head was a transparent red veil, ringed with red flowers. She wore a red dress with gold detailing, along with a fluffy, deep blue cloak around her shoulders.

A small plaque on the painting’s frame read, ‘She who united the Xia system, She who first lit the path of righteousness, 6th daughter of the Saint, First Archon Krintinix Pemrisi. 3778.’

As Maria and Niarith entered the suite, Lolanene looked up from her position on the couch, still wearing the same outfit as yesterday, “Oh hey. Y’all get it done?”

Niarith said nothing, looking down at the floor and crossing her arms.

Maria walked over to the couch, sat down on the floor next to it, and sighed, “We did. Went off without a hitch, actually.”

“Wish I could’ve been there to watch that man’s life fade away…” Linilith said, her voice sultry and disturbing.

Tantrii turned around from where she’d been standing at the window, “Linny, why are you like this?”

Linilith’s expression brightened, “I dunno!”

“Anyway,” Niarith began, “It’s done, and the deal is on. Merchanadan wants to meet tomorrow morning.”

“Things seem t’ be workin’ out better’n we expected. We were lookin’ at havin’ a bunch’a independently armed civs, now we’re gonna have a small army. Combine that with our small army, ‘n’ Intigrelt’s freaky robot things, and we might actually have a chance.”

I just have to talk to her, in private, and we’ll see if she goes for it. Mirideth can watch, and she’ll find out what it is that’s going on.”

“I do so love voyeurism.” Mirideth said.

Lolanene stared for a moment, “There weren’t no sarcasm in that. Was there?”

“No, there was not.” Mirideth replied.

Maria walked slowly down the empty hall, Lolanene had returned to Niarith to give Kinekial her chance at Maria.

I can’t believe I’ve let you have access to my brain.

Now to head into the alley, change into her uniform, and get ready to murder a scientist.
Ladiziar stepped into the shadows behind a dumpster and briefly grimaced at the smell. Carefully she set her heavy pack on the pavement next to her, leaning it against the metal wall of the apartment building. No one was around, good. Ladiziar took off her denim jacket, placing it in her pack. Then she took out the black, skin tight rubbery bodysuit, cloak, and face mask, setting them briefly atop the dumpster’s lid. She took off her top, feeling oddly vulnerable and embarrassed standing in the alley in just her bra and leather pants. The feeling only multiplied when she took the pants off as well. She dressed in the identity hiding uniform as quickly as possible.
The uniform was comfortable, the bodysuit felt almost like she wasn’t wearing anything. The cloak was a comforting weight atop her shoulders, the nanite display making her nearly invisible, at least from a distance. The mask and her orange shades completed the look, making her almost entirely unidentifiable.
Quickly, she sealed her pack, pressing the two nanite strips together to bond them. It would only open again with her biometric signature.

Tantrii turned at the voice, and saw a thin woman sitting on the couch. She wore a leather jacket with some sort of sleeveless knit garment beneath it, and black pants. She had her feet up on the coffee table. Her eyes were a light green and seemed to glow faintly, they were clearly artificial. Her dark hair was mostly hidden beneath a black leather flat cap.
The woman regarded her with only vague interest as she smoked a cigarette, “Well?”
“Uh, my name’s Tantrii. I’m with the IIF. We’re working with the Syndicate to-”
The woman waved her hand dismissively, “Yeah yeah, I know all that shit. Just wanted your name.”
Tantrii crossed her arms, “So who are you then?”
She breathed out a smoke filled breath, “Name’s Belinari Montarozark. This is my apartment you’re standing in. I grew up with Vinilencia. Never really gave a shit about her whole power fantasy. But y’know, an old friend needs help, you help, right? Even if that means harboring the most wanted fugitives in the galaxy in your apartment and letting ‘em run comms for their war here.”
“Uh, if you say so.” Tantrii replied, confused.
Belinari put her feet on the floor and leaned forward, ashing her cigarette and looking up at Tantrii, “So, IIF, huh? Ain’t a great acronym, doesn’t really roll off the tongue.”
Tantrii shrugged, “I didn’t pick it. I joined up cause it was a chance to have it better. I just do what I'm told and try not to get killed.”
“Is it, then? Better than your old life?”
She nodded, “Better than living my life being told that sure, I’m a woman, I’m valid, I can be whoever I want to be. But then if I try to have the body I want to have I’m an abomination? Yeah, I’d say it’s just a bit better.”
“If you say so, kid. Way I see it, life is easier when you just lie low and keep quiet. All this blowin’ shit up and killing people is just messy.”

Slowly, over the hours, the group dwindled, until only Maria, Niarith, Ryani, and Lolanene remained.

“I’m still surprised to see you two together.” Niarith said, “I just never would’ve thought about it.”

Ryani smiled and blushed, “Believe me, I was as surprised as you. Probably more.”

“I mean ya did convince these two t’ save my life way back by turnin’ us all in. Thought that wouldn’t have an effect on me?” Lolanene smirked.

“An effect that took four years to kick in?” Maria asked, “Quite the slow effect.”

Lolanene shrugged, “I had t’ be young ‘n’ dumb ‘n’ impulsive first. Date some kinda asshole. Get that life experience in ‘fore I got with somebody worth it.”

“Just glad you think I’m worth it, Lolanene.” Ryani kissed her on the cheek.

“Yer more’n worth it, Ry.”

Theirs was a dark business. They dealt in death and suffering, all with the hope of a better tomorrow. But times like these, the small moments, the friendship, the love, it all reminded Maria what it was for, why they did it. It was times like these, more than any other, even more than when she was killing, that Maria felt truly alive.

She couldn’t help smiling back, “Yes, well, some things change easier than others. Speaking of changes, my name isn’t Lucia anymore. It’s Maria. Technically it always has been, Lucia is my middle name. I started going by it after… Something happened when I was a teenager. The things I’ve been through since I left have caused… a lot of self reflection.”

“I can see how they would. Well uhm…” Alicia blushed, “If you don’t mind me saying so, Maria is just as beautiful a name as Lucia.” She blushed harder.

Maria blushed as well, “I don’t mind at all, Scarlet.” Unthinkingly using her pet name for Alicia.

“Glad you two are getting along better!” Niarith said suddenly from Maria’s right, startling her, “That was a rough reintroduction.”

“Y-yeah, it was. I’m just glad we’ve moved past it for the most part.” Maria said, nervous and embarrassed at how easily she’d fallen back into old patterns she could no longer engage in.

“Me too.” Alicia said.

Niarith smiled, “I’m Maria’s fiancee, by the way!”

Alicia seemed to miss a step in her stride, her expression too stiff, not truly as neutral as it was trying to be, “Oh. That’s uhm, that’s great! Congratulations Maria!” A similarly stiff smile replaced the former expression.

Maria smiled back, though it looked as genuine as it could, given her facial simulation didn’t allow for much nuance.

“So uhm, Mirideth!” Alicia said, seemingly desperate for any change of topic, “She’s… in there with you? She can’t affect you, can she?”
