Linear perimeter from the Bay of Fundy to Key West, and across the Atlantic to Europe and Africa totals ~10,616 miles.

A ~10,000 square mile wind farm off the east coast of the US (from Massachusetts to Delaware) would have a perimeter of about 786 miles...

To Whom It May Concern:

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) serves as a fulcrum that supports the delicate balance of multidisciplinary research focusing on foundational understandings of the Earth system. To dismantle and/or privatize the broad swath of resources and knowledge in the web of students, academics, and public servants connected to NCAR would be akin to self-mutilation, as the drain would bring a range of harm to the United States and the world at large.

There is no one area of NCAR activities, functions, or platforms that could be viewed as singularly important, but the value could best be described by pointing out the fact that cooperative research and the sharing of accumulated knowledge and skills is one of the greatest strengths of NCAR—bridging gaps in both science and the human experience.

The work and output from those who work at NCAR, and those who utilize the computational power and data from NCAR, have a net positive impact for disaster preparedness, human health, national security, and public safety. The cost of dismantling or weakening NCAR goes beyond itemized components of the NCAR budget and will bleed into a financial loss in various industries (e.g., agriculture, air travel, building construction, insurance and reinsurance agencies), and the ultimate cost of loss of lives.

To reiterate, the abrupt decisions to look at NCAR, a widely-respected, indispensable public resource, and want to restructure it as a means of trying to turn a profit or balance the books completely undermines the purpose and value of NCAR. The "product" of NCAR is a better world for humanity, not something for sale. Public service isn't a business.
