Mantle #1 and 2 are now available at Comic Hunter in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island! This is a terrific shop, fulfilling the islanders’ needs for new comics, back issues, and graphic novels!

In I Hear A New World, the second in his five-book Long London series, Alan Moore has a lot more fun than his comic book fans might realize. This one taught me about the Krays, Joe Meek, and other bits of recent British history. The warm afterword by Moore was also a delight.

Savage Dragon #280! Is this the best cliffhanger since the last page of SD #9 in 1994?? Yes, @eriklarsen.bsky.social has written and drawn this book for 280 straight issues. It belongs on more readers’ pull lists! Support incredible achievements! (P.S. Angel’s looking more like her mom every day.)

I didn’t realize how much I missed Andrea Sorrentino, but his work on today’s Fantastic Four #13 is beautiful and unexpected. The story by @ryanqnorth is offbeat and clever, an interesting stew with the gravitas of the artwork. Happy Canada Day!

Somehow @christophcondon.bsky.social and Stefano Casell turned Reborn: Ultimate Impact #2 into one of the best Punisher comics in recent memory — just terrific-looking, badass-written Frank Castle. I enjoy the current Punisher book, but this team should be next in line for a run on the character!

What an issue! In New Gods #7, the foundation of Kirby’s Fourth World is revealed — massive ideas and cosmic conflict! AND, this 1972 comic book is quite clearly a stepping stone between 2001: A Space Odyssey (which Kirby would later revisit) and the George Lucas Star Wars films.

I’m having a blast bingeing Jack Kirby’s Fourth World Saga, but little did I know Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #139 and 141 included an appearance from… Don Rickles? Yep, he’s in the story — along with his doppelgänger, Goody Rickles — and Jack does a great job with the jokes!

Is this my favorite take on the character? No. Am I tired of every story relitigating his origin? Yes. But The Punisher: One Last Kill is so well-executed, the definitive Bernthal hour. Happy to see Mike Baron, Klaus Janson, Garth Ennis, and Steve Dillon in the credits.

Today I re-read the Geoff Johns and @1moregaryfrank.bsky.social story from Spider-Man / Superman. I’d been thinking about it since release day. There’s a lot packed into 8 pages, but the story — and, ultimately, Superman — left me with a hopefulness that I don’t often feel from superheroes lately.

I just read the second issue of Alias: Red Band by @samhumphries.bsky.social and @geraldoborges.bsky.social and realized Jessica Jones has never had a bad series. This is great! The artwork is noir and expressive. The story’s both funny and incredibly dark. I’m all set for three more chapters.

I’m bingeing late 90s Spidey runs that aren’t on digital. Unsurprisingly, @jmdematteis.bsky.social’s Spectacular Spider-Man with Luke Ross stands out. I just finished #”-1”, contrasting Flash Thompson’s childhood with Peter’s. 🥺 It’s a crime these stories aren’t more readily available.

My kid doesn’t realize how lucky she is to have a dad obsessed with buying comics on release date.

Just finished reading Daredevil: Enemy of My Enemy by @alexsegura.com, a fun novel featuring the Punisher at the core of its story (which, to be honest, is why I read it). I enjoyed the book’s twists and turns and admired how Segura did justice to many characters from across Daredevil’s world.

The first half of Sam Kieth’s The Maxx (scripted by William Messner-Loebs) was iconic, remembered as much for the MTV show as the comics. Alan Moore wrote a bridging issue before the narrative flipped into a calmer, sadder kind of strange. It’s all well worth a (re)read.

My goodness, Ultimates #22 by @denizcamp.bsky.social and Juan Frigeri was an incredible issue, among the very best of the series. Heartbreaking confrontation between two best friends who’ve gone down opposite paths. Camp shows us how good men come to do such bad things.

Over recent weeks I finally read @tomking.bsky.social’s Batman from the beginning. I know opinions vary, but I thoroughly enjoyed the big, bold swings that King and the artists (mostly @mikeljanin.bsky.social) sustained for 100+ comics. Brilliant. (Also, Lee Weeks is a genius.)

Loved Chip Zdarsky’s Captain America #7 (w/ Delio Diaz & Frank Alpizar) and Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon #1 (w/ Luca Maresca) this week! I’m a sucker for important-feeling, slow-burn event-building, and this includes my fave @marvelcomicshqs.bsky.social toys and even ties to the Ultimate U!
