Mainstream journalists—and not just mainstream journalists—love compromise and bipartisanship for its own sake. It is a shibboleth that partisanship distorts perspectives, and that if we could just overcome our divisions, we could find common sense solutions that transcend party. Trump, in this thinking, may be extreme and bad in many ways, but serious legislators need to work across the aisle, and should find some way to work with him on something. Isn’t that what the great deliberative Senate is all about? Cool that tea, Senators! Make sure our democracy isn’t too democracyish!

I’m old enough to remember useful news conferences, but just barely. @jonathanlarsen.bsky.social is on target:

Reporters don’t get stories at public briefings. They get what officials want to say. Back when I was the living cliché of a cub reporter, I would go to news conferences and not ask questions because (a) I didn’t want to tip my hand about what I was working on and (b) I knew I could get my question answered after/outside the news conference.

I like the demolition of legitimate news conferences. Because that means there’s no more media job of “show up at news conference, get sound bite, produce a tape piece around it” anymore. Now there’s only, “Welp, guess you’ll have to do journalism.”

It should be noted that not a single other reporter in the press pool spoke up to defend their humiliated colleague. This was hardly the first time Trump has berated a journalist, which makes it that much more shocking that no one was prepared to step in. Though they work for competing news organizations, these journalists travel as one. A little solidarity would go a long way—but it would also threaten the proximity to power.

The documents cited by Pulte, opens new tab include standardized federal mortgage paperwork which stipulates that each loan obtained by Cook for the Atlanta and Michigan properties is meant for a “primary residence.” But documentation reviewed by Reuters for the Atlanta home, filed with a court in Georgia’s Fulton County, clearly says the stipulation exists “unless Lender otherwise agrees in writing.” The loan estimate, a document prepared by the credit union, states “Property Use: Vacation Home.”

One theory is that the media are in the tank for Trump. Some are. Collectively, they’re not.

The real biases are insidious. Trump is easy to talk about. He says simple things, discussed easily on TV with virtually zero research or deep thought.

Sanders discusses policy and a philosophy of government. Many in media are actively disinterested. They’re here for politics — tactical analysis, interrogating candidate “essences” (who they “really” are), and outcome-speculation.

Paul is a good example of an all-too-serious intellectual movement that has emerged from the wreckage of the Obama years, when “postracial” liberal optimism began to curdle into open contempt for liberatory struggles like Black Lives Matter or the fight for universal health care. I think of it as the far center: a loose coalition of disillusioned Democrats, principled humanists, staid centrists, anti-woke journalists, civil libertarians, wronged entertainers, skeptical academics, and toothless novelists, all brought together by their shared antipathy to what they regard as the illiberal left. The far center is for free speech and bourgeois institutions; it is against cancel culture, student protests, and radicalism of any kind.

About 10 years ago, Georgia Southern University’s auxiliary services (bookstore, dining, etc) were mostly refusing to buy student newspaper/mag ads because a Solo cup appeared in a photo. You implied someone drank beer! Now, a school logo appears on Bud Light cans. Guess why.

Given how little Americans seem to understand about our own democracy, is this a responsible headline? Yes, it’s accurate in terms of parliamentary politics. But Germany still has a government. A lot of people who see or hear this language won’t get that. They won’t research, either.
