I probably only see 1 or 2 of the very striking red admiral butterflies a year but I saw one. yesterday. I couldn't get a shot of it -- it preferred to flutter by so here's a shot from a few years ago. #photography #butterflies

The red admiral is a medium-sized butterfly with black wings, red bands, and white spots. It has a wingspan of about 2 inches (5 cm). This one is one the siding of our house. It's wings are slightly blurring and they were fluttering.

It's #TurtleTuesday because it's been a great year for Eastern box #turtles & I have loads of photos. Today's it's my favorite turtle, Ms. Bat Bagel, who I have seen multiple times every year since 2021. Here's my first sighting in 2021 and 2026's most recent. #photography #dogs #critters #reptiles

An eastern box turtle walks on a forest floor. She (definitely a female because I've found her mating plus she doesn't have red eyes) has a distinctive pattern on her shell which looks one line that says 'BAT' and below it a less distinct 'word' that looks somewhat like bagel to me.

The same turtle looking a little dusty (it had been dry for some days and turtles estivate). My dog is in the photo wit her nose down near the shell.

Five spider webs shine in the light in a woods. Four of them are in a vertical row with one off to the side. The light is bright enough that the anchor threads for three of the webs are also visible.

We had several heavy rains in June, one result of which the creeks, which are normally full of creek gravel, got scoured. This spot was left with just a few larger stone, leading into what looks like a entrance into a mystical place. #photography #woods #creeks #rocks

A creek in a woods has a gray shale bottom that has been almost scraped clean with the exception of some larger rocks that are in a line and leading the eye to a curving bank of stone and suggesting an entryway.

Sometimes when I find a newly fallen tree in the woods, I wonder why its roots let go. Other times, not so much. #photography #trees #woods

A recently fallen tree in the woods is viewed from the root ball end. The roots are completely obscured by big slabs of sandstone that kept the roots from being able to support the weight of the tree.

It's been a great year so far for spotting Eastern box turtles on our 40 acres; so for awhile I'm going to do #TurtleTuesday, starting with this unusual one which has legs that are a different color from its shell designs. #photography #turtles #woods #Indiana

An Eastern box turtle is seen on a trail in our woods. The shell designs are a nice yellow but the dots on its legs are reddish-orange. I can't tell if it is male or female because the head is pulled back in too far for me to see if its eyes are red (male).

A Great Spangled Fritillary butterfly sits on top of a horsemint (aka bee balm/bergamot) flower.

This butterfly is either a pipevine or an eastern tiger swallowtail but whichever one it is, it is hanging from a horsemint flower. It wings were moving the whole time so I'm lucky it isn't blurry.

This was Toddler Turtle Trio month. These 3 (2 1/4"; 2 3/8", 3 1/8") are the smallest Eastern Box Turtles I have ever seen. Eastern Box Turtles are a species of special concern in #Indiana so it's hope-making to see three young ones in such a short time. #photography #turtles #woods #Stunday

A triptych with 3 small Eastern Box Turtles, the first two are shown with my boot for size reference, the third alongside a stick (which wasn't much good for a reference but I took the stick home with me to measure). All three turtles were on trails in our woods.

The Friday Digital Archive Dive found two hikes two years apart where, without this text making it rather obvious, you would surely make the wrong guess about which trail is called the "Rough Trail". Taken #OnThisDay June 19, 2008 and 2010 #photography #hiking #Kentucky #NewHampshire

The Rough Trail trail -- as in this photograph -- spends a good distance going through a rhododendron and moss adorned forest. I remember nothing rough about it.

This is the Mt. Avalon trail which takes you to the mountain's summit. It wasn't all this bad but it was a rough hike. New Hampshire takes pride in its very difficult trails (switchbacks, we don't need no stinking switchbacks). This photo shows a trail that is entirely of a jumble of large rocks (some you might call small boulders).

Power's back on but earlier this morning this was the view from a few steps from the end of my driveway but in the opposite direction of this morning's post (which was not taken this morning).
