Harley lost his shit. COWS & ELK!!!! He howled and whined for about 10 minutes after this. We had to go on a walk when we got home. He was overstimulated!
We got some rain! It didn't amount to much, but it sprinkled off and on since yesterday afternoon.
This is one of my rescues residing on the Island of Misfit Plants. I will try to remember to get a picture when her blooms are fully open tomorrow. She made some beautiful babies.
This is why I never had faith in humanity to solve the climate/ecological crisis. These are the new tires for my garden cart.
I think I have a pair of Western Tanagers nesting close by. They like to hang out in the cedar in front of my cabin. A male house finch has also been hanging out. I haven't seen a female yet. Not my pics: Tanager (L), Finch (R)
I woke up to some amber liquid drops on my screen. It wasn't there yesterday. Any guesses? (Creative responses welcome 😉) I couldn't get my camera to focus on the drops, but this should be good enough. Western New Mexico, SW US
I have missed watching storms mov in like this. The last two years, I watched tiny cloud bursts in the distance, but there were no lines of storms like this. It's been a rough two years.
El Nino has not been declared yet. Soon, but not yet. Go away so I don't have to block you. I am so done with those who think they know more than they do. Here's some science from scientists:
I have learned sooooo much. Here's my chamomile and sage. The chamomile is currently protected by hardware cloth until it starts to bud. Deer love them before the bloom, but not after. You can see the brown bottles in the sage.
Big Daddy! I am almost positive this is the same horned lizard that I met when I first moved here. He lives next to where my tent was. Isn't he beautiful. Those yellow spikes are just dapper! #NewMexico #HornedLizard
@collapsewatch3.bsky.social I don't know if you remember this. I was trying to identify this sad little shrub last year. It never put off any leaves. The buds dried out from the drought. This year, it is! Per a friend in forestry: 1/2
Squeeeee! BABY HORNY TOAD! I saw 7 itty bitty baby NM Horned Lizards walking down the path to my garden. This is the only one that didn't run and hide. The head and body are only about 3/4". I LOVE that this threatened species is breeding like bunnies on my land.
It will help retain moisture in the area, which will reduce the risk of fire coming up the slope towards my house. I can't wait to see it fill up! It is so dry here. I saw 4 dust devils coming home from town. This is the largest one. Those are houses to the right.
The gambel oak cuttings I put in water are alive! Their red buds have turned green and started to grow. The ones I dipped in rooting hormone haven't changed. They're not drying out. I put them somewhere with less full sun. It's so hot with almost no humidity. I was afraid they would dry out.
I almost captured the colors. It looked like fire dancing across the sky.
When I first moved here, I found these two barrel cacti. One was in a wash, barely hanging on by a root. The other I accidentally dug up when I was clearing out some yucca to build. They are different species. Since they haven't bloomed in two years, I have forgotten which is which.
This is not OK. Typically, my highs are around 50F and overnight lows well below freezing. I was just outside in a t-shirt and shorts with bare feet looking at all the wildflowers. There are grasses coming up. Everything should be brown right now, but it's green.
My garden is starting to get perky! I have dozens of volunteer chamomile and cilantro. I only planted 4 chamomile last year. Two never went completely dormant. Something ate my entire goji berry bush down to the ground late fall. It's coming back! See alt text for ID. 🌱 More below
