The chairman of the London-based Latin Mass Society, Dr Joseph Shaw, branded the SSPX’s move unjustified, but also urged bishops to make better arrangements for traditionalists who remained loyal to the Pope.

In a statement on Monday, the SSPX accused Rome of “acting inconsistently” towards dissenting groups, referring to its relations with “Orthodox schismatics” and the recognition of bishops approved by the Chinese Communist Party.

The Pope, it complained, had “rolled out his red carpet” for the Archbishop of Canterbury in April (News, 1 May), when Catholic doctrine did not “recognise the validity of Anglican consecrations or the ordination of women”.

Davey calls for by-election boycott
Ed Davey has called on all parties to boycott the by-election in Clacton.
The Liberal Democrat leader said: “If this by-election does go ahead now, we are calling on all parties to stand aside and refuse to give oxygen to Farage’s vanity project.”
But Davey added that the government should block the election until after the parliamentary standard’s commissioner has finished his investigation.
“The people of Clacton should have all the facts before they cast their votes,” he said.
