In addition to today's large earthquake in Japan (6.8, yellow trace at 08:00), I see at least 2 other earthquakes here! China-5.8 (Yellow, 04:00) Mexico-5.9 (Blue, 05:00)
Very impressive how well Raspberry Shake low-cost citizen seismographs record strong earthquakes at quiet stations.
Magnitude 7.3 earthquake off coast of Mexico, recorded at Westport Astronomical Observatory
Magnitude 7.3 earthquake today off coast of Mexico, recorded across New England
Today's "Alan get a life" seismogram 🙂 Weston Observatory today: Ripping up the old asphalt driveway to replace it with new asphalt.
Yes, there really is a "Sandwich Plate" 🙂 Magnitude 6.4 earthquake - South Sandwich Islands (USGS "Green alert" for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.)
Yes, if an Atlantic Ocean earthquake is big enough, it can trigger a significant East Coast tsunami. This M4.2 earthquake (6/30/26) was too small to be of concern for tsunami hazards, but it was near a 1929 M7.2 earthquake south of Newfoundland that triggered a significant tsunami.
The powerful, destructive earthquake in Venezuela was well-recorded across New England with Raspberry Shake low-cost citizen seismographs. The situation remains very bad there 😢 😢 😢
Overwhelming for me to think about this tragic earthquake within the context of what sense I could make of earthquakes in this region back in 1980. This graphic shows results of my PhD thesis within the framework of the (very new at the time) theory of plate tectonics.
Powerful, destructive earthquake in Venezuela 😢😢 Recorded across New England with Raspberry Shake low-cost citizen seismographs.
Could have, but... The New England Seismic Network and BC Raspberry Shake networks, are maintatined by two BC faculty, me (Alan Kafka), and John Ebel, now both retired and still working 24/7/365 to maintain the stations we have going...
Post The 2026 World Cup win over Australia was well recorded at the Seattle Stadium. Why then don't we have similar seismic recordings (like the one here for the BC-BU "Battle of Comm Ave") for the World Cup events at Boston Stadium in Foxboro, MA? Explanation in 1st comment.
Seismographs located right at Seattle Stadium record World Cup event. facebook.com/share/p/1DN7...
Magnitude 6.6 earthquake: Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Recorded across New England with @raspishake.bsky.social low-cost citizen seismographs.
Magnitude 6.1 earthquake off the coast of Cuba, recorded across New England with @raspishake.bsky.social low-cost citizen seismographs.
Magnitude 6.1 earthquake off the coast of Cuba, recorded in New England at Westport Astronomical Society (@westportastro.bsky.social).
Major earthquake in Philippines, recorded in New England at Westport Astronomical Society.
Magnitude 5.7 earthquake today off the coast of Oregon/Northern California today, recorded at Westport Astronomical Society in New England.
Magnitude 6.2 earthquake in Italy yesterday, recorded by @raspishake.bsky.social seismographs in New England.
Meteorites and earthquakes and storms, oh my! The Earth has its own agenda. Humans learn to work around it... Numbers show the order in which our seismic stations recorded the meteor. NASA location is where NASA says the meteorite landed.
Looks to me like today's meteor sonic boom was a bit closer to Boston than the USGS location.
Magnitude 6.9 earthquake today in Chile, recorded at @westportastro.bsky.social
Magnitude 6.0 earthquake today in Hawaii, recorded at @westportastro.bsky.social
Magnitude 6.6 earthquake in South Pacific Ocean, recorded at Westport Astronomical Society, Westport, CT.
Magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Japan, recorded in Westport, CT. USGS: Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
I updated these 2 summaries of my thoughts about earthquakes in the Northeastern US: Why Does the Earth Quake in New England? bcespquakes.com/ak_site/why_... Why Does the Earth Quake in New York City? bcespquakes.com/ak_site/why_...
