Everything changes for the Man in Yellow when Flattop puts a target on his back in Dick Tracy #19! Don't miss the latest @madcavestudios.com issue written by me and @michaelmoreci.bsky.social with art by @geraldoborges.bsky.social and @markenglert.bsky.social!
If you’re a Batman fan and have never read this one, fix that immediately. I’ll be chatting about this issue in an upcoming episode of the BEST ISSUE EVER - THE FORGOTTEN FIVE edition hitting next month, with co-host (and co-writer) @saracentury.bsky.social!
Brennert’s take on Batman is always a treat, and Staton’s work here is superb - his storytelling is powerful and he’s able to shift from the big action moments to more nuanced character work with ease.
While the story is loaded with lore and history, Brennert never deviates from the characters and their personalities - part superhero caper, part romance, part meta-commentary, it’s no surprise this issue became a classic.
This is probably one of the best examples of that, showing you an aged Bruce Wayne looking back on his life and the case that changed its trajectory forever.
I think, it's also why readers connect with Ultimate or Absolute versions of the heroes - they don't know what to expect, and the suspense is palpable. The Earth-2 heroes felt like real people.
One of the things I loved about the Earth-2 heroes in pre-Crisis DC lore is that they could age, die, marry, or pass on their respective mantles. In short, they could change vs the “illusion of change” we see with a lot of comic book IP.
THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #197, written by Alan Brennert with art by Joe Staton and George Freeman (cover by Jim Aparo!), has to be one of my fav Batman stories ever. Packed with heart, wonderful character moments, and cutting right to the core of so many characters - particularly Batman and Catwoman.

Been rereading KNIGHTFALL off and on lately, and wow - @drawmanley.bsky.social comes in SO hot on BATMAN #500. Just amazing work - layouts, linework, pacing. I remember reading this as a kid and being blown away.
One of my favorite parts from THE DUSK, co-created with Liz Little and @davidhahn.bsky.social, was the "villain" DUST-MITE, who I hope we can bring back someday.
