I don’t know how David McKenna endured this with a straight face.

The pad could stay, I was told, but not the pen. I pointed out that the official prohibited items list made no mention of writing implements. The guard said my pen fit under the "Any other items determined to be potential safety hazards" category.

I asked how a pen was hazardous and he immediately brought a coworker over and fake stabbed him in the neck repeatedly with my pen. "Right in the jugular!" he said, completely not joking. I was in awe at the ludicrousness. So I entered with my Notes app and a bad attitude.

The other is the inherent disposability of most Netflix shows. We've heard lots of tales about Netflix execs telling creators to make sure their work can be followed by people who are watching while scrolling on their phones. Whether this is exactly what's been said, the great majority of Netflix's scripted original series create the impression that the streamer views mediocrity as a feature, not a bug. There are certainly some excellent Netflix shows — A Man on the Inside's first season was wonderful, and still not a lot of people came back for the second — but on the whole the streamer seems to aspire for stuff designed to play in the background. And when you combine that with the binge model, and with the problems facing all streamers, is it any wonder that fewer people remember or care about these shows whenever they come back?

One of the more annoying things trans women deal with is unlearning internalized misogyny by diving into its symbols. For example: animal print. Always taught that was a way to overly-sexualize women. These glasses came with a set I ordered. I tried them on nervously and…I Love them.

Heady talk for a guy who’s won exactly as many MLS Cups as Taty Castellanos.

Lionel Messi, by most estimates the greatest soccer player ever, celebrated his 39th birthday a little early this week at a World Cup that already has his name all over it. He did so in typical Messi fashion: with a series of improbable, elegant goals and a new record. Messi has now been at the top of the world’s most popular sport for nearly 22 years. He’s won a World Cup, four Champions Leagues, 13 league titles, eight Ballon d’Ors — more than anyone ever — and now the most World Cup goals of all time (18), among dozens of other honors. So far at this World Cup, he’s scored a ridiculous five goals in two games. That’s already a lot of Messi, no matter how you look at it.
