Turtle huddle for your 9 o'clock photo! 24 January 2020 and Washington's first known Covid19 case was still only 2 days old. Actual pandemic measures were months away. I was enjoying Austin, Texas for a few days. The amount of wildlife in the downtown core around Ladybird Lake was great to see.

At least 9 turtles, by head count, are sunning themselves on a log that is partially submerged. Some of them have partially climbed up on their neighbors, producing a series of lean-to arrangements.

Nature doesn't necessary need to be difficult for urban areas to access. Macleay Park in Portland is tonight's 9 o'clock photo, approximately 20 blocks from the core of downtown and near several bus routes. 10 March 2025

A dirt trail passes from the right to the left side of the photo across a bridge with metal handrails. A small stream cascades down the rocks in the center of the photo. The surrounding canyon walls are covered in forest, with ferns and other undergrowth plants throughout the visible ground.

Time for a #ThrowbackThursday 9 o'clock photo, originally tweeted at the Other Place 17 Sept 2021, taken 20 June 2021: Over an hour until sunset and already it's shaping up to be really colorful. Washington State Ferry Puyallup is headed toward Kingston from Edmonds. Taken from the Walla Walla.

A mixture of dark clouds and blue sky is starting to gain an orange hue. The sun is partly blocked by the clouds near the top of the photo, with the much more clear sky starting about 1/3 of the way down the photo. The water is mostly in shadow, and the dark shape of one of the larger ferries is visible against a backdrop of lit water and dark forested shore in the background.

Foxglove growing wild for your 9 o'clock photo. This species has been introduced to a number of different states, though it is native to North Africa, western Europe. Considered a noxious weed and can dominate landscapes, but attractive nonetheless. Town of Bay Center, WA in background. 4 July 2026

A series of purple trumpet shaped flowers are on the end of a long stem. The remnants of a number of flowers are all along the bottom levels of the same stem. Several stalks of grass are to the left and right. In the background and to of focus is a body of water, and in the far distance is a forested mound (not even high enough to call a hill really) with scattered buildings on it.

World Orca Day deserves an Orca Photo for your 9 o'clock photo. Looking south from the area near Granny's Cove, American Camp, San Juan Island National Park, Washington, 19 May 2024 Olympic National Park is mostly obscured, but you can still see some snow caps up there.

The bottom 1/3 of the photo is open water, with an extremely distant far shore that is mostly indistinct. The shape of tall mountains is quite clear, however, rising to 2/3 up the photo. Some of the tops of these mountains have snow. In the water, about 1/8th of the way from the bottom, are the tops of two orcas, with dorsal fins and arched backs showing quite well.

Seaside, Oregon having a bit of weather for tonight's 9 o'clock photo. 1 Feb 2016

$A shoreline view with the beach running from left to right, curving back to the left about 3/4 of the way across the photo. The shoreline vanishes into the distance. A number of buildings are visible along the shore in the distance, but they are too far away to make out the exact size and shape. The upper 2/3 of the photo is sky, almost all of which is heavy clouds. A lot of them are various shades of dark grey, but a blob of them somewhat right of center is lit up with yellow, with some of the refracted light creating a pink hue in a number of the other areas.$

Munson Falls is on the Oregon Coast, just south of Tillamook. As seen in tonight's 9 o'clock photo (actually a video and your 77 seconds of nature zen) from 2 May 2026, it's the tallest waterfall in Oregon's Coast Range.

Silver Falls State Park is well known for "Trail of Ten Falls" with aprox 12 medium size waterfalls. Depending on season, there are dozens more that may be vastly smaller, but no less beautiful, as seen in tonight's 9 o'clock photo (actually video and your 77 seconds of nature zen). 7 November 2025

It's time for another #ThrowbackThursday 9 o'clock photo. Yet another view of the Lime Kiln Point Lighthouse at sunset, 29 July 2024. There may have been a bit of rain but the color was still pretty good. Originally Tweeted at That Other Place 1 October 2024

A white lighthouse with a red roof is sitting on an outcropping of rock about 20 feet above the water surface. There are a few stings of bull kelp floating in the water. In the extreme distance on the other side of the water, there is a horizon line of a few forested hills. Much of the sky is grey, but directly left of the lighthouse and running about 1/8 of the way from the left edge is a streak of bright yellow, with layers of red and orange reflecting in the clouds above this island of light. The light in the lighhouse is visible as a white dot.

"California Lilac" actually covers some 58 species. Cultivars fairly common, bringing total to around 200. Across the board, they are reasonably drought tolerant and survive northwest dry season pretty well, while still looking good (as seen in tonight's 9 o'clock photo) Cannon Beach, 30 May 2026

"Urban wild spaces" may seem like an oxymoron but such things do exist. Capitol Lake in Olympia is a popular wintering spot for a number of bird species, and with the forests along the banks kept in a reasonably natural state, much of it is wild-like rather than artificial. 1 November 2025

The bottom half of the photo is open water, with several hundred small dots scattered all over the surface. These are wintering water birds of various species. In the background, the hillside that slopes downward to the far shore is covered in deciduous trees that have turned yellow with the season.

Sunset over South Puget Sound on mostly cloudy 8 Oct 2018 for your 9 o'clock photo. This was taken from northbound Amtrak 518 as it travels along Puget Sound between Nisqually and Tacoma. Amtrak trains returned to the original 1874 route (parallel I-5) in 2021, avoiding the congested scenic line.

The bottom 2/3 of the photo is open water, with a very distant opposite shore that appears to be mostly forest, but is so very distant it's difficult to tell other than some basic land forms. The sky immediately above this very distant horizon has hints of red and pink among the grey clouds with many openings to the sky behind. The foreground is a small bit of blurry near shore, obviously taken while in motion.

I suppose most would put something patriotic here, but for those suffering from a month of their neighbors blowing stuff up, how about instead some bird life at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal, 10 May 2016? Helps counter noise?

Hotel de Haro is decked out for the 4th of July on 3 July 2018. Roche Harbor Resort was once a busy industrial mining town with a reputation for exploitative labor practices. While it costs a bundle to stay the night here, the resort grounds and surrounding trails are open to the public.

Time again for a #ThrowbackThursday 9 o'clock photo. The Battersea Power Station in London is a fairly famous landmark, in this 12 Sept 2018 view it is being redeveloped into an entire community. It occupied some 8 million square feet! Much of the shell of the old structure has been preserved.

Aea around Middle Oneonta Falls on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge was ravaged by fire a few years ago, and at the end I point upward a bit to show the current state of the forest. Still green! 4 May 2026

The bottom 1/6th of the photo is open water, with a very distant shore in the distance made up of shadowy forests. The top 1/3 of the photo is dense clouds of various tones of grey, but between the distant horizon and the start of these clouds is a bright yellow and orange streak of sunset light, with some faint reds showing up on the edges of the grey clouds. There are two sailboats anchored in the water with sails fully furled.
