Glad to see this opinion piece, but I wish the NYT would actually internalize it. If you counted up the number of scumbag candidates on the GOP side, I am positive it would be way higher than the number of "radical left" candidates on ours. And yet the latter trend gets almost all the scrutiny.

I've got updated projections for Texas legislative districts -- they are a bit less sanguine than the ones I posted in June! Mostly this is due to the dropoff in how Dems are doing in the generic Congressional polling, which is a factor in this model's estimate of what kind of wave year it'll be.
Barack Obama in 2008 had the biggest margin of any candidate this century. That wasn’t all because of Palin, I promise you.

Pulling other fun stuff out of our #txlege predictions: the most vulnerable Democrat still has over a 70% chance to win. And that's probably an underestimate, given that Eddie Morales already beat the same challenger in 2024 and way overperformed Harris & Allred. Must be a good fit for the district.
Lotsa state house races that #TXGOP isn't contesting this year, tho. They're all solid D seats, of course. But, like, here's a Dem whose district went narrowly for Trump in 2024. If he had a challenger he'd have to spend money to defend it. He'd still win, but Dems would have less $ for other races.
The modal value in our model's prediction is that Texas Dems get to 70 seats in the State House. That would be an eight-seat pickup from where they are now. They'd still be in the minority, but I'll bet the chamber would have a different vibe with a 70-80 split versus the current 62-88 split. #txleg
