Okay, there is clearly a co-ordinated PR campaign in play for the pervert glasses.

I've seen people calling the Meta Ray-Bans "pervert glasses." I get the instinct. But I want to offer another view, because this weekend changed how I see them.

I introduced my mother-in-law to a pair. She's in her seventies, and she has macular degeneration. She's losing her sight.

In a couple of days, they've been life-changing. They will potentially let her stay in her own home. They save her from a hundred small embarrassments. She's decided to get her own.

Here's the thing people miss. There is specialist assistive eyewear out there. It costs around four thousand pounds, and it looks like it. It marks you out as disabled the moment you put it on.

That's exactly what puts her off. It's the same reason she waited for discreet in-ear hearing aids rather than the big beige NHS ones. She didn't want to be seen as disabled. She wanted to compete on equal terms.

A trendy pair of Ray-Bans lets her do that. Same job, no stigma. She looks like anyone else in the room.

So before we settle on "pervert glasses" as the shorthand, consider who actually pays the price for that stigma. Sooner or later it's a blind person wearing them, wearing the suspicion too, unable to even see the hostility coming.

Mainstream, affordable, and desirable is exactly what makes assistive tech get used. That's not a threat. For some people, it's independence.

And more of it. A great gesture in itself, if it wasn't designed to detract from the wider criticism of how these items are being use to target and harass people, mostly women.

The absolute state of this. Comments off, of course. If Meta genuinely wanted to create these glasses as a tool for good, there were plenty of avenues they could have pursued. But instead, here we have charity-washing at its very finest.
