The flesh market was not one for exotic fancies. Life and limb were coppers to harvest, and those who'd turn their noses up had long since fled on the coalships. Anything not caked in salt would end up in the refuse bins or the corpse pile by morn's end, whichever was closest.

But today, the monger offered something that lured crowds from across the city. Wrapped in iron scales and strung up on the drying flake, it squirmed to an audience trawling through their ragged coin pouches.

The auction began at noon. To the victor?

A fresh soul.
