I unexpectedly got a reply to an email from my MP. While this is weak in places, it sounds like he genuinely isn't happy with the EHRC guidance and he implies he would have signed the EDM if he wasn't a minister

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for writing to me about this important issue.

As your constituency MP, I strongly believe all communities - including trans and non-binary people - deserve safety, dignity and respect. I am proud to have worked closely with trans and non-binary constituents over many years and have also heard from them directly the pain and hurt that has been caused by the nature of public and political discourse in recent years.

Everyone should be able to live their lives free from intimidation or abuse, and I remain committed to building a fairer, more inclusive society, locally and across the UK and internationally.

Throughout my time as MP for Cardiff South and Penarth, I have consistently campaigned and stood up for marginalised communities, including our trans and non-binary community. Over many years I have met local trans and non-binary people, support group members and activists to discuss their concerns, and I’ve listened to and raised these concerns with Ministerial colleagues.

As a UK Government Minister since 2024, you will of course understand that I am not able to speak or sign motions etc. in the way that I was previously able to, but this does not affect my ability to raise your concerns directly as your local MP.

I am firmly of the view that we need to see an environment where all people, regardless of their gender identity, sexuality or other protected characteristics, feel safe.

As you know, the Supreme Court made a ruling on the Equality Act 2010 in April 2025.

I have heard directly from constituents how the judgment and public discourse around it has caused fear and concern for some. However, ministers have repeatedly emphasised that while single-sex spaces must be safeguarded in accordance with the judgement, trans people must also be protected.

Importantly, this judgment does not alter the fact that trans people also remain a protected group under the Equality Act 2010 and should be able to live their lives free from harassment and discrimination.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission as you are aware also consulted on its draft Code of Practice, and Ministers made it clear to the EHRC that the consultation had to be meaningful and properly engage with affected groups. I understand more than 50,000 people responded to it, and that the Commission met with people representing affected protected characteristic groups, as well as parliamentarians.

Nevertheless, I know that you, and many other people and organisations, have also expressed concerns about the new EHRC guidance - including for example concerns about the practical workability of the guidance. I have raised these concerns with ministerial colleagues on your behalf, as your local MP, and will convey any response I receive in due course.

Please be assured that I will continue to support an open and inclusive community here in Cardiff South and Penarth where everyone feels welcome, safe and respected. I want to make sure all my constituents, whoever they are, are able to fairly and safely access public services, and live free from discrimination.

In that regard - as we all celebrate Pride month I am delighted that we have secured progress on a number of key issues I have long fought for change on - including legal change earlier this year to make hate crimes against LGBT+ people aggravated offences - and you will be pleased to know the government this week published our draft bill to introduce a ban on conversion practices https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-pushes-forward-with-conversion-practices-ban-to-protect-lgbt-people-from-abuse

All 4 Plaid Cymru MPs have now signed it (Liz Saville-Roberts, MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd, Ben Lake, MP for Ceredigion Preseli, Llinos Medi, MP for Ynys Môn, and Ann Davies, MP for Caerfyrddin). Steve Witherden, Labour MP for Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr, has also signed. These are the only Welsh MPs to sign the EDM so far
