While working on this story, I requested the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office’s “Brady Database,” which is *mentioned by that name on the office’s website.* The office claimed that my request lacked specificity and wouldn’t provide the database!

The district attorney’s office says on its website that it maintains a “Brady Database” with information about police misconduct, including “judicial findings that specifically call into question an officer’s credibility as a witness.”

Palumbo did not provide the Brady Database in response to the records request. Palumbo said that the request lacked specificity because it “[did] not define or limit which records” the Dump was seeking.

Palumbo has not yet responded to a July 1 follow-up message pointing out that the district attorney’s office identifies the document by this name on its website.

On the morning of July 9, the Dump filed an administrative appeal with the state’s supervisor of public records, the transparency watchdog who serves in the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Office, arguing the request sufficiently idenfitied the document.

My media literacy tip is that if a police union guy is talking, he's probably bullshitting you (and yes, they're almost always men).

Calderone said that crime is increasing in Boston and that the solution is for the city to hire 600 more police officers. Citing two anecdotes, Calderone complained that Boston is “just a few extra shootings away from becoming like Chicago.” He said he was worried Boston would devolve from a “great city” into a “garbage city” like Chicago and Baltimore—both of which have large Black populations, a fact that’s probably just coincidental to how he views them.

But halfway through the article, we learn something interesting. As it turns out, homicides in Boston are down so far this year compared to the same period in 2025. And about two thirds of the way through the article, we learn this:

“When asked about the criticism, BPD spokesperson Mariellen Burns told the Herald the city is ‘at half the homicides we were at this point last year,’ halfway through the year. The Herald reported last month that there were seven homicides, as of mid-June, compared to 16 by that time last year.”

Homicides aren’t just down—they’re down by more than half!

Important context:

The technology, first installed in 2014, had a false positive rate of 82 percent of the time it triggered in Cambridge, according to critics at public safety committee hearings over the past two years and in the council meetings debating the technology. There were also surveillance concerns, and objections that the devices had never been approved through the proper city procedures.

It also did not always hear actual gunfire. Police said ShotSpotter gave no alerts during a gun battle May 11 on Memorial Drive because there were no microphones nearby. Spencer Piston, an associate professor of political science at Boston University who has given testimony to a council subcommittee on the technology, told councillors on Monday that it was his understanding a ShotSpotter microphone is installed about four blocks from where a shooter fired as many as 60 rounds from an assault rifle.

I wrote this to encourage people to be more thoughtful and avoid knee-jerk negative responses to news that someone convicted of a violent crime was granted parole.

By connecting these grants of parole to Maura Healey—the MassGOP’s political rival—these posts are presumably supposed to imply that releasing these people from prison is wrong. But what exactly is the complaint here...? Why shouldn’t the people in these stories be released? The MassGOP’s posts don’t engage with this question in any substantive way—they’re just fishing for an emotional reaction.

Yes, it’s true that these parolees were convicted of terrible crimes. But that’s meaningless without additional context. Every story about someone who is released on parole will naturally involve someone who was convicted of a crime resulting in a jail or prison sentence because those are the only people who can be paroled in the first place. The Parole Board’s job isn’t to look solely at the details of the crime a person committed, however horrible they may be—it’s to look at the person as a whole. Parole represents the idea that people can change that and they sometimes deserve mercy.

Which is funnier, this or the time Rayla Campbell couldn’t collect enough signatures, filed two failed lawsuits against the secretary of the commonwealth, and livestreamed herself melting down against an Elections Division employee? massdump.ghost.io/mass-gop-can...

In 2020, Campbell ran a disastrous campaign for the US House of Representative, failing to get on the ballot in the primary or general election. She filed two unsuccessful lawsuits against Galvin: one to force him to put her name on the primary ballot even though she didn’t get enough signatures and a second to force him to put her name on the general election ballot even though she didn’t get enough write-in votes during the primary. The Supreme Judicial Court rejected both lawsuits.

The day before Campbell filed the second lawsuit, she argued with an Elections Division employee in the main lobby of One Ashburton Place. A Sept. 9, 2020, Facebook Live video shows her yelling and interrupting the employee as he tries to explain that she didn’t get enough votes.

“Everybody on my Facebook Live right now is listening to you guys breaking the law,” Campbell says.

The man eventually walks away as she continues to yell at him: “Walk away just like Kennedy. Running away because you know that you’re breaking the law and you’re denying me my legal rights. As a Black Republican Catholic—what are you afraid of?”

Campbell went on to receive just 695 write-in votes during the general election and lost to Democrat Ayanna Pressley, who received 267,362 votes.

Bronske was noticeably absent from the hearings. Winslow said that Bronske was deposed and invoked his Fifth Amendment right in response to all questions surrounding whether he forged signatures and copied from a Republican voter list.

Bronske said he would invoke his Fifth Amendment right if he were called to testify, according to Winslow.

In its decision, the commission said that given Bronske was likely the signature gatherer for the challenged signatures it would take an “adverse inference” against him as a result of his refusal to answer questions.

“Taking the 5th demonstrates to the Commission that Mr. Bronske has something to hide,” the commission said in its decision.

Democrats did very poorly a couple of years ago because of the defund the police. That just seemed out of touch to a lot of people, including a lot of Democrats. And will the party make that mistake again because the -- where the energy is in the party is in the DSA wing? But hope for the long-term elections is the traditional parts of the party somehow getting some mojo and some energy to match what they're up against.

Massachusetts resident and TPS holder Marie Fleurival was making breakfast when GBH News called her on Thursday. She hadn’t yet heard the news.

Fleurival turned off the stove and went silent for several seconds. “Oh my goodness,” she said. “What are we gonna do?”

Fleurival is a home care aide who was previously laid off by her employer due to confusion over the ongoing changes to TPS, and then rehired after a GBH News story. She owns her own home, has a son in middle school and is pursuing a nursing degree while she works.

“This is a disaster for the Haitian people. We work hard, we contribute to the economy,” she said. “We must stand firm, we must stick firm together. God can make a miracle.”

Again, what is the actual complaint here? Why does the Mass GOP think this man shouldn't have been granted parole? It's not engaging with the substance, just fishing for an emotional reaction.

I've started checking POST Commission orders for stories that haven't yet been reported, and here's one I found last week.

The POST Commission said on June 18 that former Massachusetts State Police trooper Alan Gamache entered into an agreement to never again seek employment in law enforcement in Massachusetts. According to the agreement, “On multiple dates between June 2023 and September 2023, [Gamache], while on-duty and using his State Police-issued phone, sent inappropriate and sexually explicit messages to a female co-worker.” The POST Commission’s disciplinary database says that Gamache left the State Police in lieu of discipline. A department investigation determined that Gamache “sent multiple inappropriate text messages to a civilian employee,” “exposed himself via Facetime to a civilian employee,” and “violate[d] the MSP harassment policy by in-person conduct and text messages towards a civilian employee,” according to the database.

What's really astounding about this piece is that it doesn't acknowledge even in passing that police misconduct results in harm to people or that more should be done to prevent it. It's presented entirely as a PR problem for the “honest” cops, who apparently are the real victims.

Police officers are entrusted with extraordinary authority and must be held to the highest professional, legal and ethical standards. When officers violate that trust, they damage not only their own reputations but also the reputation of their department, profession and every honest officer in the state. Mass. police leaders have spent years responding to these scandals. What they have failed to do is aggressively tell the other side of the story.

Sorry, but I can neither confirm nor deny that federal agents have questioned me about Gavin Newsom's hygienic practices.

Newsom, a longtime political rival of the Republican president, said in a video posted on X that federal agents have knocked on the doors of his friends and former employees, and have asked for records. Newsom didn’t provide specifics on the nature of the probe, but his office said the inquiry appears to have recently expanded into “increasingly personal matters involving the Governor’s family and professional network.”

In the latest twist in a confounding youth sports saga, school administrators on Friday said the cigars that several Ipswich High School lacrosse players were photographed smoking last week, leading to their suspension and the forfeiture of a playoff game, were in fact real, not fake as some parents claimed.

In a statement, Ipswich Schools Superintendent Brian J. Blake and Ipswich High Principal Jonathan Mitchell also essentially accused parents of orchestrating a coverup with a false claim that the cigars contained chamomile and English breakfast tea rather than tobacco, which violates state athletic guidelines.

“In support of this claim administrators were shown a receipt from Shaw’s grocery store,” the administrators said.

On Thursday, “in light of the uproar generated in the media,” Mitchell visited that store “to see if employees could reproduce a receipt of the tea purchases that went into the purportedly fake cigars,” administrators said.

A manager produced a receipt indicating the purchases were made shortly after 1 p.m. on June 8, roughly 20 minutes after Mitchell had alerted six families by email about the potential rules violation and “impending” probe, administrators said.

The “receipt allegedly supporting the claim that they were filled with tea had the date and time smudged out,” administrators said.

Photos also suggested the cigars were real, administrators said, offering their version of events in a back-and-forth youth sports controversy — complete with police camera footage - that has sparked intense debate.

At the same time, Massachusetts spends more money per case than most all other states, according to the report. Meanwhile, people who can afford to pay their own attorneys fees are probably slipping through the cracks.

Because the state’s screening process is outdated and falling short, it’s “likely that a significant number of defendants have received state-funded attorneys without a verified need,” Shapiro said.

The process should be strengthened and modernized, including through routine tools used by “any merchant seeking to conduct a credit check,” Shapiro wrote in his letter.

If the judge does not grant Peixoto bail, he could remain incarcerated for years while the district attorney’s office appeals the ruling that overturned his conviction.

O’Shea, the judge who overturned Peixoto’s convictions, denied him bail in the May 26 ruling. However, Kavanaugh said it was improper for O’Shea to do so without a hearing. She also said that O’Shea assumed the case would quickly proceed to trial, but prosecutors have since filed a notice of appeal, which could delay a potential trial for years.

She urged Yessayan “to grant Mr. Peixoto the opportunity to prove that he has every incentive to come back however many times are needed to clear his name.”

The judge said he would take the bail motion under advisement. He did not indicate when he would issue a decision.

Brian Peixoto’s lawyer said that after his murder conviction was overturned, he was transferred from the prison where he was participating in programs, including training a service dog, to a county jail where he was put in solitary confinement.

She said Peixoto earned a GED and a college degree from Boston University while in prison. He also became a service dog handler for the organization NEADS, she said.

“I note that he is wearing his NEADS service handler t-shirt [in court], because when he was transferred abruptly after the decision was issued from his cell at MCI Norfolk to Dartmouth House of Correction, that’s what he was wearing, and he was with his puppy,” she added.

Kavanaugh said that within hours of the decision overturning Peixoto’s conviction, a guard arrived at his cell and told him he had less than an hour to pack.

“And just like that, he lost everything,” Kavanaugh said. “He lost access to all of his property, his legal papers. He lost access to his tablet, which was how he communicated with his family and with his lawyers. He left his puppy without knowing what happened to her. He was transferred to a county facility, where he was placed in solitary, because they had no idea what to do with someone in his position, who had been in prison for so long and was suddenly thrust back into pretrial detention. And he’s now on 21-hour-a-day lockdown without any access whatsoever to programming.”
