STATEMENT REGARDING HB 1232
To my fellow North Carolinians,
After further discussion and feedback from constituents and members of the community, I have decided to remove myself as a sponsor of House Bill 1232 in its current form.
I remain firmly pro-life and strongly believe in protecting innocent human life. That conviction has not changed. However, I also believe legislation must be written with absolute clarity so that its intent cannot be misunderstood or broadly misinterpreted in ways that create fear and confusion.
The purpose behind this legislation was to affirm the value and dignity of unborn life — not to suggest that women should face capital punishment or to create uncertainty surrounding difficult medical situations.
Unfortunately, portions of the bill's current language have led to significant misunderstandings and differing misinterpretations that distract from the core pro-life message and intent.

I am a Charlotte Catholic and my three children all recently graduated from Charlotte Catholic High School. Bishop Jugis was neither well liked nor well regarded. In fact in 15 years we rarely ever saw the Bishop in Charlotte. He always cancelled on commencements. He was an ultra conservative who put in place like minded priests which broke up many communities. The Lord sent us two Popes who have corrected course in Charlotte. The community is healing and coming together. A few vocal outliers who think every thought that enters their mind should be shared online long for the recent days gone by where they can try and dictate how people live in their faith.
They will fade into the background as community once again takes hold.

On Wednesday, Jan. 14, before noon, the Walk for Peace Buddhist monks will be traveling along U.S. 21 through the Town of Fort Mill limits as they continue their 120-day, 2,300-mile walk from Texas to Washington, D.C. They will stop at the Anne Springs Close Greenway for lunch before moving on.
The Fort Mill Police Department is actively coordinating with the York County Sheriff's Office and the Walk for Peace organizers to ensure a safe walk for the monks.

We expect significant traffic delays, especially north on U.S. 21. Drivers should avoid the area and consider alternate routes, such as I-77 or the Fort Mill Bypass.
As the Walk for Peace makes its way through our community, please keep in mind the following tips for ensuring everyone's safety and not impeding the flow of traffic, and for greeting the monks:
-Do not park on the side of the roads near where the monks are walking.
-Do not touch the monks, but you can greet them with hands in a prayer position and slight bow.

CBS News abruptly pulled an investigative "60
Minutes" segment on the Trump
administration's deportations of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador's CECOT prison after the Trump administration refused to grant an interview, according to an email obtained by The Washington Post.

The decision came directly from the network's editor in chief, Bari Weiss, according to an internal email sent to producers from the segment's correspondent, Sharyn Alfonsi, who called the decision tantamount to handing the White House a "kill switch."
"If the administration's refusal to participate becomes a valid reason to spike a story, we have effectively handed them a 'kill switch' for any reporting they find inconvenient," Alfonsi wrote.

The team had sent questions and requested comment from the White House, the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security for the story, according to the email.
But the administration declined to grant the journalists an interview.
"Government silence is a statement, not a VETO," Alfonsi wrote. "Their refusal to be interviewed is a tactical maneuver designed to kill the story."

#ncpol From Rucho v. Common Cause to the Texas gerrymandering case.

Vladeck: It seems to me equal parts striking and unfortunate that, in just six years, we've gone from the court's almost apologetic tone in Rucho v. Common Cause, in which a 5-4 majority held that federal courts couldn't entertain constitutional challenges to partisan gerrymandering even if such behavior is unconstitutional, to the mindset that comes through especially in Justice Alito's concurring opinion in the Texas case - that partisan gerrymandering is a legitimate government enterprise that courts should be in the business of affirmatively protecting. One can think Rucho is right (I don't), and still think severe partisan gerrymandering is an anti-democratic scourge that Congress can and should eliminate.
