Edwin Landseer's 1864 oil painting "Man Proposes, God Disposes" shows a grim arctic landscape, painted on a wide rectangular canvas.The piece is diagonally divided in two by the remains of a ship's mast. On either side, two polar bears engage in an ominous play of sorts. To the right, one bear is munching on a rib, appearing wholly satisfied with its grotesque banquet. Just before the bear lays the remainder of a human rib cage, opened wide like a hideous flower.

To the left, the second bear is fiercely tearing apart the ship's sail, its body creating a line perpendicular to the mast. On its left, a telescope lays abandoned on the cold snow. The viewer's gaze is drawn through the space by the two lines, and only upon a second glance does one notice the other eerie details.

The icy desolation surrounding the main scene appears cruel and cold, with giant icebergs composed of sharp edges and firm outlines, immersed in a faint light. The rest of the image is filled by the dreary palette of the arctic gloom that surrounds the grizzly scene of the polar bears' delight, partially hidden by ice and the remains of the shipwreck.

What horror movie image haunts you? I saw Fire In The Sky (1993) in the theatre as a kid and this harrowing moment kicks off the most memorable sequence of the film.

In this screenshot from the 1993 film Fire In The Sky, a man leans over the corpse of another man. They are both underneath a glowing diaphonous membrane. The living man holds his hands in messy claws, having accidentally just plunged inside the rotten, collapsed abdomen of the dead man.

love to open the YouTube app

A screenshot of the home page of the YouTube app. Instead of there being videos I might want to watch, the app is displaying, first, a sponsored ad and, second, a promoted video. The videos are identical, because the slop du jour today is a Verizon mobile ad recycling notoriously difficult Canadian comedian Mike Myers as Dr. Evil, about 25 years too late for relevancy. It's also new footage, meaning it's old Mike Myers in the Dr. Evil makeup, so there's an uncanny plasticene appearance to his skin. Overall, it's a thoroughly unpleasant experience putting me off wanting to use the YouTube app, which already has the habit of foisting slop onto me that desktop YouTube doesn't.

new neopronouns just dropped

A pair of restrooms from a rural barbecue restaurant with what could be described as a "ramshackle" aesthetic. The single-occupant restrooms – which are offered at the restaurant in addition to two larger, multi-occupant gendered restrooms – are labelled "HER'N" and "HIS'N" respectively, and both adorned with woodcut pigs presenting their backsides. An ole-timey looking grandfather clocks sits between the two doors.

Here he is on the right side. He's supposed to represent the casting of lots for Jesus' possessions. My grandma had something similar to this in her house and I was always fascinated by how weird and pagan it seemed.
