A time capsule was buried in the grounds of Castle Howard in North Yorkshire on 17th November 1982 by George Howard, then chairman of the British Broadcasting Corporation. It is scheduled to remain sealed and not be opened until the year 3982.

Before electric power in homes became mainstream, a gasolier was the top-of-the-line lighting device. Open gas flames replaced the traditional candles. #ChandelierSunday This gaslight chandelier was designed by architect Sir John Soane in 1816.

From this angle, the gasolier looks like a black sphere with glass-drops chains wrapped around it. As a matter of fact, this is just perspective. A gasolier has the typical chandelier features, however, it has the shade pointing upward, and is usually wider them a standard chandelier to accommodate the gas jet. The gasolier was fuelled directly from the estate gaswork. For this piece it is supposed that the lights were lit using a design by scientist Johann Wolfgang Dobereiner whereby the gas ignites automatically when passed over a black platinum nipple. The controls for regulating the flow of gas are located in the doorway to the Inner Hall.

#CoolRefuge : the strong room of Burton Constable Hall for #PalacesAndGardens

we look inside a cellar-like room beneath the flagstones. An electric bulbs shines into the room and on some pennies lying on the ground. It is said that the strong room had been re-discovered only in 1994 - alas, it had been empty then. It probably was used to store the family silver.

#CoolRefuge :Temple of Aeolus, the keeper of winds of Ancient Greece for #PalacesAndGardens Without walls and sitting on a specially-built mound, the temple is certainly a place to enjoy a breeze. It is located in Kew Gardens, UK

A tenple in Greek style seen from the foot of the specially-built mound, and surrounded by the lush greenery of trees and a meadow . The small building is from 1763. It had an added bonus: a rotating seat in the middle, allowing you to take in the views across the gardens from any angle. Unfortunatelly, this feature is lost today.

Let‘s at least have some iceicle-shaped crystal drops on this hot #ChandelierSunday.

Chandelier with 8 branches, each one is decorated with iceicle drops. The top piece features two gilded crowns. Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781 – 1841) was a Prussian architect, city planner and painter who also designed furniture and stage sets. Schinkel was a leader in the International Neoclassical and Gothic Revival movements. His style is defined by a turn to Greek rather than Imperial Roman architecture, an attempt to turn away from the style that was linked to the recent French occupiers.
The chandelier on the photo is located in the Catherine Room of the Palace of Eutin.
