I've got the 2021 VP reissue and in the liners they say the 88 and 03 reissues are indeed from a different source. This version doesn't sound particularly blasted.
The Strange Girls - Beset - The frogs are extremely loud tonight after the rain. Pairs well with this, which was at least partly recorded on the porch. Been somewhat obsessed with this band lately. Downer, ultra low-fi NZ noise folk. Checks all my boxes, basically.

Early Music - Old Strings - The ever-dependable Jon Collin brings some collaborators along for some of the most beautiful music of his career. Nicely varied, lovely mid-fi sound... it's gonna be tough to top this one in 2026.
Sy Lyn - Songs About Housework - no idea how I found this one. Maybe it was recommended by @filthythanks.bsky.social ? In any case, this is some deeply weird synth-pop adjacent stuff that sometimes veers into free jazz or tape noise. On Simon Fell's label. Fascinating stuff.
Mourning Cloak - Beyond - On a deep Discogs dive and behold, a wild @tarotplane.bsky.social appears! This is a dark, spacy folk project from 1999, helmed by one Timothy Renner. Gets nicely far out on the longer tracks.

Letha Rodman Melchior - Handbook for Mortals - very quiet music that's also very heavy. Feels appropriate, given everything.
New vinyl from Daniel O'Sullivan and @nofansrecords.bsky.social has arrived and it's a real beauty! I'm not normally a vinyl purist but the pressing on this is absolutely immaculate and you really should pick it up in that format if you can.
How on earth has David been gone ten years?! Station to Station is my favorite Bowie song and album - shame he didn't remember making it.
Here's a prompt for you - bands where you like exactly one song and can't stand everything else. For me it's ELO - Telephone Line. One of my all-time favorite songs, and there's not a single other song by them that I like.
My Christmas present this year was the deluxe version of Yara Asmar's "Everyone I Love is Sleeping and I Love Them so Much." Deluxe is a bit of an understatement - the pics don't do it justice but this is easily the most beautiful packaging I've ever seen. What a privilege to have this music!
