Today I was proud to nominate Andy Burnham as Leader of the Labour Party and our next PM

Statement from Antonia Bance MP
Today I nominated Andy Burnham to be the Leader of the Labour Party.
Andy has an outstanding record as Mayor of Greater Manchester - bringing buses back into public control, bringing investment into the city region and getting homes built.
Andy gets it: nothing is more important than making sure families in places like Tipton, Wednesbury and Coseley have enough money to deal with the cost of living, and enjoy life a bit too. Andy will be a Prime Minister who puts areas like ours across the North and the Midlands first.
Andy has already spent time with our Mayor, Richard Parker, learning about the West Midlands - and I know as Prime Minister, Andy will give us the powers and funding we need to make sure the whole West Midlands succeeds. For too long too much power has been held in Whitehall - and that has to change.
I am so impressed by Andy's commitment to bringing prosperity and good jobs back to areas like ours - places hit by decades of deindustrialisation. His advocacy for manufacturing, reindustrialisation and making things in Britain again is exactly what we need - a practical vision and a real plan.
I wish him every success and he will have my backing as Leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister.

In doing so, we will build on the good work of this government and follow some key guiding principles.

Here’s the relevant extract Key issue - unmentioned here - is cutting industrial energy costs. There is no reindustrialisation til our energy costs are at France or Germany’s level. We need to act to take policy costs off for industry as we ramp up renewables and SMRs

Crucially, as we do so, I want to ensure we back British workers and businesses.
This means we must go much further than ever before through the defence investment plan in backing British resilience, using a sustained increase in defence investment not only to provide the kit our armed forces need, but also to generate economic growth and create apprenticeships and jobs in communities that have seen opportunities drain away.
We will do this by boosting our sovereign capabilities in areas where we already have incredible strengths and in the tech of the future - from shipbuilding and energetics to Al and quantum.
We will also focus on reducing foreign dependency, securing inward investment and building new industrial partnerships with allies. Reindustrialisation through defence — and other sectors — is critical for both our economic and national security, building resilience in all our places. It will be a core priority for me.

Great statement from Labour First We will only deliver the change we promised and beat populism by governing with Labour and trade union values. Why we must reject alliances with rival parties:

This weekend saw the "soft left" organisation, Compass, hold a conference arguing for a "council for the progressive majority", aimed at securing a pact between Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens, the SNP and Plaid Cymru. Current and former Green leaders Zack Polanski and Caroline Lucas spoke at the conference, alongside Labour and Lib Dem MPs.
Compass is a partner, with Open Labour, in the soft left "Mainstream" slate for Labour's NEC elections this summer.
Labour First absolutely rejects this call for alliances with rival parties that are seeking to destroy and replace Labour.
In the local elections in May, hardworking Labour Councillors lost their seats through no fault of their own. Many faced personal attacks, including from activists in some of the parties that Compass now seeks to form an alliance with. An alliance with parties that behaved like this would be an insult to defeated colleagues who deserve better from our movement.
Labour does not share the same values as the Green Party, which has given a haven to far left extremists and antisemites we struggled for years to expel.
Labour does not share the same values as the SP and Plaid Cymru, which seek to break up the UK and support unilateral nuclear disarmament.
We note that the Liberal Democrats co-created the austerity that destroyed British public services when they were in coalition with the Tories from 2010 to 2015.
The Labour Party was created as an independent parliamentary voice for the trade unions and working people and their communities because their interests were never represented by other parties. That necessity is still there
today.
Our Party rulebook says one of our objects is to "promote the election of Labour Party representatives at all levels of the democratic process" i.e. not to promote the election of any other party's representatives.
We need Labour to deliver in government and win re-election based on its record, not dodgy deals with other …

I want to congratulate everyone elected as councillors across Tipton, Wednesbury and Coseley, in both Sandwell and Dudley.
People want councillors who know their areas, put the effort in and get things fixed when they don't work. I'll work with anyone who wants to make our towns better places to live and bring people together.
I'm incredibly proud of our brilliant Labour candidates. Thank you for everything you did-knocking on doors, standing up for our values and campaigning for the change we all want to see in our towns. Now and always-we stand for a fair deal for the Black Country-good jobs, great local services and real chance for working class people to get on in life.
