A stocking present: a storm glass, once used by the RN to predict the weather. It suggests that frost is coming. Granted it's not a warm day but... it's meant to be Summer round here! Threads of crystal at top => windy weather, though, which checks.

I found the account from Solzhenitsyn's 'Gulag Archipelago' (I looked it up a while back, and still had the image)

An account of a Russian district party conference where a 'tribute for Comrade Stalin' was called for.
As one, the attendees rose to give a standing ovation that went on, and on, and... on... for... eleven minutes!
The person who finally ended this endurance test was subsequently arrested and sentenced to ten years on some pretext, although his interrogator's parting remarks to him were:

"Don't ever be first to stop applauding."
