Right now, there’s a man slumped on that godawful sofa who straightens the moment the door closes after Stede.
Captain Edward Teach, if that’s really him, has no right to be that handsome, is the first thought in Stede’s head.
His navy blue blazer is casually undone, hugging his fit form snugly, and the first three buttons of his snowy-white shirt are undone as well, an outline of a tattoo and breast hair peeking cheekily in his open collar alongside his folded aviators. His long, greying hair is in a neat bun on the back of his head, but several wisps of hair have escaped and now frame his face in a very attractive manner.
Stede swallows.
The pilot gets up from his place and holds his hand out, a warm smile on his lips. Stede can’t but notice a quick, appraising once-over the pilot gives him, and that makes his brain blue-screen for a moment before he has to forcefully remind himself about the circumstances of this meeting.
“Good to see I’m not the only one being carpeted here,” the pilot jokes when Stede gives his warm hand a shake. “Since this place has… Well, you know, very ‘principal office’ vibe.”

Those are my most favourite scenes from chapter 6 of "Dreams". Two very different confessions, two very different hugs, but the same idea in both — "I see you and I love you". Those are breaking points for Alamein. If I could draw, I'd draw those two scenes, but I can't, so I can only imagine them 💜

Madigan says, “Oh, Alamein,” and then he— He just slides off the armchair, right onto the floor, this dirty, concrete, cold floor in his neat and tidy slacks, and Alamein sways towards him and finds himself in the ring of his arms, warm and heavy around his back. He hides his face on his chest and sobs and feels Madigan’s fingers in his hair, a soft whisper in his ear, something in the line of “There, there, let it out, I’m here, I’ve got you,” and it all just makes him cry even harder.

They must be a strange picture to anyone who might enter the work bay at this moment: tangled on the dirty floor, hands around each other, swaying softly from side to side. But no one comes in, and Alamein takes one deep breath, then another, and a third one, and his head is dizzy with Madigan’s smell, and it somehow calms him down. He feels Madigan’s lips press to his forehead in a chaste kiss, and he lets himself get lost in that moment, in that feeling.

“There you go,” Madigan whispers, brushing off wetness from his cheeks in a ghost of a touch of his fingertips. He must be smiling, but Alamein can’t tell for sure, with how close their faces are. There are crinkles around his eyes and a single deep wrinkle between his eyebrows.

Madigan kisses his forehead once more and pulls away. One of his hands is still in Alamein’s hair, playing with soft curls at the back of his head, another is cupping his cheek, thumb still hovering over trails of tears.

”Dad?” Al calls him. “You all right?”

“Yeah,” he tries saying, but his voice is hoarse. He clears his throat and says it again.

“Do you wanna talk about it?”

He shakes his head miserably. “Nah. I wouldn’t know how, Al.”

There’s a sound on the other side of a door — a heavy thud followed by a grunt. The door rattles on its hinges, and then Al sighs and probably throws his head back because there’s a muted knock against the door.

“That’s all right,” Al says slowly, “because not everything can be expressed in words.”

Alamein’s breath catches in his throat. “Did he tell you that?”

“Yeah,” Al admits reluctantly. “The very first time he came to have a lesson with me. I was bitching to him about how I wouldn’t be able to write that essay he wanted me to because I wouldn’t know how to put everything I feel about the book into words. And then he just said it,” he coughs and makes his voice higher, in a poor impersonation of Madigan’s voice, “‘Not everything can be expressed in words, Al’. I didn’t get it at first. But then he gave me that Polaroid. And— it has become clearer since then.”

In my regular 'thinking about Alamein and Madigan' hours today I'm remembering how I did a whole research of cars import to NZ in 70-80s to find Alamein's car for the first art. Yes, it was never mentioned in the fic. Not even once. It was Toyota Corolla E70. I still have a ref I sent to Annie 👀
