I had access to tickets an hour before public sale (because I went last week) and as I was trying to find 7 consecutive seats I could see the gaps all around disappearing quickly. So glad I got them!

I've just handed in my last assignment for my Masters of Public Management through Victoria University of Wellington. 26 years ago I dropped out of school, School Cert my highest qualification. I never thought I'd have any sort of university qualification, let alone a Masters.

Kāpiti Coast District Council are considering a motion at their next meeting that could see them withdraw their declaration of a climate emergency. I wrote to the Mayor and my Ward and Districtwide councillors this afternoon to ask them to stand strong for the climate and vote this down.

I'm writing to you regarding the upcoming notice of motion proposed by Crs Laracy and Cooper that would initiate a review of the climate emergency declaration that Council made in 2019.

As one of your constituents, I strongly urge you to vote against this notice of motion when you discuss it at your upcoming meeting.

The declaration of a climate emergency is one I was immensely proud of the then-Council for making. It has served as the bedrock upon which much activity has been based - including the adoption of the Climate Emergency Action Framework, the target of a net-zero 2040 and the current proposed Emissions Reduction Plan. While at times I have (both individually and as part of Low Carbon Kāpiti) called on the council to do more, or to move faster, nonetheless I think Kāpiti can be proud of the steps we have taken to date.

Pushing for a review of the climate emergency declaration now would be a serious step backwards. Even if it ultimately resulted in no change, it would take up significant time and effort from both Council staff to undertake the review, and from members of the community to participate in it and advocate for their position on it. That is the best possible outcome. The worst outcome is something which one of your Council colleagues has been open about as his ultimate aim - to completely stop climate action from being part of business as usual in Council planning and activity.'

We know that climate change will cause this to happen more frequently, and more seriously. The climate emergency declaration underpins not only our emissions reduction work, but also our resilience and adaptation work.

Cr Laracy has noted that normal emergency declarations are short lived. This is true, but it is because normal emergencies (an earthquake, a flood, a landslide) are themselves short. Soon, they move onto a recovery phase, and at some point during that, an emergency stance is no longer appropriate.

The climate emergency is different. It will not finish overnight. We will not shift from response to recovery in the next year. The emergency will continue for some time to come - but that does not make it any less of an emergency. In fact, the long-lasting nature of this emergency only increases the criticality that our institutions continue to take it with the level of seriousness than an emergency declaration implies.

How does a child who grew up singing Anim Zmirot in synagogue and attending Moriah Kindergarten and College go from filling out the paperwork to make aliyah to co-founding a group of Jewish activists opposed to Israel?
