Peacock in Thailand
@aspenspapa
Currently based in Thailand and loving life. I used to do Army MI stuff a long time ago. He/him/flower-if-you-want-to.
I joined the VFW when I got back from IZ because an old dude told me to & I didn't see any harm in it. I later paid for a Life Membership, but still never went to a meeting or joined a Post. Then while researching & planning our move to Thailand I discovered that there is a Post in Chiang Mai. 1/4
Bars in the north of Thailand don't give out free peanuts or other bar snacks, but nearly all of them will serve you hot cashews for around a dollar.
Oh, I just remembered I have pics of myself nailing the lewk, from this past week, even.
It's Monday morning here in the Eastern Hemisphere. It's not my birthday, but I was born on a Monday so it's my birth-day-of-the-week. That means it's my turn to feed the grandparents; occupants of my spirit house. They get the things I like; patongko & soy milk, a joint; plus red Fanta & water.
This beer garden and pad Thai place is a three minute walk from our house. Been by it a hundred times & never stopped before. Big mistake. The beer is cold and the noodles are flawless.
Lunch from the food court at my Thai language school: khao khai jiao gap gai gaeng khiao (omelet rice with green curry chicken). The omelet & curry station always has the longest line but it's so worth the wait. 65 baht. Arroy maak!
Taking the "VIP" bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai. The bus we boarded first had the AC crap out a block from the station, so they took us to the bus yard to switch busses. We're now 45 min behind schedule, but the good news is this bus is hotter than the first. 🥵
Impromptu road trip to Pai has commenced. Hoping to find some hot springs and decent weed. 🤞
How my bike seat looked when I got back to it wearing my black dress trousers.
They had me place Gerry's wreath last and there was no room left, so everyone got to watch me awkwardly rearrange the whole mess.
Flags & wreaths were placed. Prayers were solemnly prayed. Now we're entertaining the US Consul General.
I have never been a fan of American style spaghetti with meat sauce, or "spaghetti bolognese." But this "Chiang Rai sapagetti" is the absolute GOAT.
We and our house have been blessed in the Lanna Buddhist tradition. 🙏☸️
We shopped at the Chiang Mai amulet market this morning. We didn't buy any amulets, but we did pick up this fantastic Rahu figurine. Rahu eats the sun, causing solar eclipses.
I can't speak to the quality of this homestay, but the proprietor just came out and gave us a mango for no reason while we were getting on our scooters. She seems nice! And it's right across the street from a very reasonably priced weed shop. For the budget conscious lover of cats & cannabis.
I hope this inspirational message will lift you up as it has me.
"It's too early to buy beer, so I guess I had better go to the temple and make merit" is probably exactly what the people who made the alcohol sales laws wanted me to think this morning. 🙏
The standard moving van in Thailand is the song taew (two benches) a.k.a. rodt daeng (red truck, although they come in every color nowadays), which is also the standard bus and school bus. We should be able to move in one trip, but that still means packing & taking everything down the elevator. 😓
Holy mackerel. Saba set for lunch to celebrate that we found a place to live for the next year. 🏡 It's an adorable little cottage in a quiet neighborhood minutes from town.
I cannot possibly explain to you in a short Skeet just how phenomenal this production was. And it was most definitely a production. Folks had entrance music and light shows. There was choreographed dancing as well as drunken partier dancing. There was a singing contest. And co-MCs; one in drag.
