Cloudless #Venus. In absence of any gases absorbing visible light or aerosols blocking the path, Rayleigh scattering in a sufficiently deep atmosphere would be able to fully scatter all light back, producing a white planet. #CelestiaProject #astronomy #space #planet

I have been wanting to draw Beta Pictoris b. Now that a new paper on it dropped, here it is: meet the young superjovian, glowing hot at 1600 K, tinted pink by atmospheric absorption. Its moon is completely fictional. (More in ALT) #astronomy #space #planet #exoplanet #BetaPictoris

This artwork depicts the extrasolar planet Beta Pictoris b. The planet is depicted as a glowing pink planet, with brighter, hotter equator covered by patchy darker clouds, whose rotation in and out of sight produces the observed photometric variability. Poleward regions are dimmer, and features brighter spots of upwelling and clouds.

A completely fictional satellite accompanies the planet. This moon is depicted as an Io-like volcanic rocky body with bright frost surface, and a massive volcanic plume. It is dimly lit by the star (to the left), and by the planet (as a sliver of pink glow at its terminator on the side facing the planet).

The background is taken from Celestia space simulation program.

I quickly whipped up a new system orbital diagram for Beta Pictoris system in Celestia, though planet d's position on it is wrong.

A possible appearance of GJ 504 b, a massive extrasolar planet orbiting the star 59 Virginis (GJ 504), 17.6 parsecs away from the Sun. This planet is popularly believed to be pink due to an official art. Please keep that myth alive, I like it. #art #astronomy #space #exoplanet #planet #browndwarf

The artwork depicts the planet GJ 504 b = Gliese 504 b = 59 Virginis b. The planet is depicted as a pale blueish turbulent world with a light-coloured equatorial band, strings of small storms, and wispy clouds. The blue colour comes from water and methane absorption, and the banding and wispy clouds are created by clouds of salts, mainly KCl and ZnS. Limb darkening can be observed at the edge of the planet's disc.

Surrounding the planet are some facts doodled into space near it, including its radius of 0.92 Jupiter radii, effective temperature of 564 K, mass of 25.2 Jupiter masses, planet-star mass ratio (labelled "q") of 0.0186... (planetary regime?), and a cloud icon indicating that the planet has KCl and ZnS clouds.

Thinking about it I probably made the planet too dark. Here's a new version, which is 100% paler and more boring to look at! ...just go with the old one. I'll have this one for future reference.

This artwork is mostly the same as the old version, except the planet is paler and the banding even subtler.

GJ 504 b Today a paper on performing direct spectroscopy on GJ 504 b was published, revealing many interesting things about this planet, so I decided to draw it! I like calling it "Sakura", hence that symbol. #art #astronomy #space #exoplanet #planet #browndwarf

The artwork depicts the planet GJ 504 b = Gliese 504 b = 59 Virginis b. The planet is depicted as a blueish, mostly blank ball with some faint banding and wispy clouds, not unlike Neptune. The blue colour comes from water and methane absorption, and the banding is created by clouds of salts, mainly KCl and ZnS, which also form thin wispy high altitude clouds.

Surrounding the planet are some facts doodled into space near it, including its radius of 0.92 Jupiter radii, effective temperature of 564 K, mass of 25.2 Jupiter masses, planet-star mass ratio (labelled "q") of 0.0186... This artwork depicts a fictional state of the inner Solar System, 4 million years after formation, when the protoplanetary disc had just dissipated. Aside from the isolated Mercury, there are nine planets packed in the region.

In the foreground are the ten protoplanets (also known as planetary embryos or oligarchs), along with their names. Vininghktan (today known as Mercury) is depicted as an airless, cratery planet with numerous large-scale eruptions of lava. The other planets are cloudy worlds with varying shades; Ene and Nema, the next two planets, are creamish due to having sulfuric acid clouds; Dani, Kano, Yuri, and Ado are whitish as they feature dense cloud decks of water clouds. Finally, Ino, Sumi, and Mona (Mars) have patchy water cloud decks. At the centre of the image is the title of the image, "Oligarchs of the Inner Solar System".

This artwork depicts three snapshots of Earth (labeled as Terra) in the future, going from top-right to bottom-left. The planet's name "Terra", the planet's symbol derived from the Flag of Planet Earth, and the image's title "The Magician's Final Acts" are presented at top left.

The first snapshot, labelled "+1–2 Gyr", takes place 1–2 billion years from now. It shows a somewhat familiar-looking Earth, with oceans of water and landmasses, yet a relatively barren one. Here, multicellular life has been slowly declining due to unfavourable environment — carbon dioxide levels are low and temperatures are high — and now they are approaching their extinction.

The second snapshot, labelled "+2 Gyr" on the first line and "Moist greenhouse" on the second, takes place 2 billion years from now. It depicts an Earth that is experiencing a moist greenhouse; weakened tropospheric cold trap allows water to reach the upper atmosphere, where it is lost. The planet's appearance is dominated by the thick, hazy, water vapour-rich atmosphere, pale blueish in colour with white polar/night side clouds, overlying the surface which contains a few remaining seas pooled in what were once the deepest points in the oceans.

The third snapshot, labelled "+6 Gyr" on the first line and "Salt seas?" on the second, takes place around 6 billion years from now. It depicts a Venus-like planet; featureless cream-coloured clouds obscure the surface, where salts once dissolved in oceans melt to form black-coloured seas.

There are two doodles placed at the beginning and the end of the chain. The beginning doodle, adjacent to "+1–2 Gyr", is a stylized icon of a tall forest, accompanied by the phrase "Present Day". The end doodle, adjacent to "+6 Gyr", is a stylized icon of a mountain range melting, accompanied by the phrase "Crust melts".

At lower-right corner, a personified Terra can be seen, saying "...".

Gliese 876 is an M-dwarf orbited by four planets: a sub-Neptune (d), two jovians (c and b), and a neptunian (e). The outer three, c, b, and e, are in 4:2:1 resonance like the Jovian moons, and so they share a brain cell. (more in ALT) #ACelestialJournal #art #astronomy #space #exoplanet #planet

This artwork depicts the personifications of the Gliese 876 system's celestial bodies. The three planets in mean-motion resonance are playing by throwing and catching asteroids and comets, much to the dismay of Gliese 876 d.

Standing at the centre is Gliese 876, the star, who has glowing yellowish-orangish dreadlocks-like hair. They tilted their head slightly to their left to avoid a comet thrown by Gliese 876 e.

To the left of the star is Gliese 876 d, the brownish planet cloaked by haze who is crouching to avoid getting struck by the objects being thrown around.

At the left edge of the image is Gliese 876 c, whose cream-coloured turbulent and messy hair is kept in place by jetstream hairbands. They are about to throw an asteroid towards Gliese 876 e.

On the left in the foreground is Gliese 876 b, whose sidebangs are tied below their chin. They are leaping to the left, into the frame, to catch the incoming comet. Due to being close to the camera, most of their body visible in the image is shaded.

Finally, peeking from behind Gliese 876 b is Gliese 876 e, a banded beige Neptune-massed planet who had just thrown the comet. The comet is a contact binary similar to 67P, and is currently outgassing and forming a tail.

The stars in the background are not labeled, but includes Alkaphrah (Kappa Ursae Majoris), Upsilon Ursae Majoris, 23 Ursae Majoris, and Muscida (Omicron Ursae Majoris).

This artwork depicts the extrasolar planet Epsilon Indi A b, a superjovian orbiting nearby star Epsilon Indi A. Despite orbiting far from its star and receiving much less sunlight than Earth, it retained enough heat from its formation to be about as warm as water's melting point.

The planet is white due to water clouds, tinted creamish by its parent star's light. The planet features faint darker and lighter bands, and there are also white high altitude clouds and storms.
