yesterday was nonbinary day, now today is judgement day, what a time to be alive (or not)
i cant believe they're making all the players sign the declaration of independence in front of the founding fathers at the MLB all star game what is baseball even about
i am just learning that today's semifinal is hosted in the "dallas stadium" which is not even in dallas but in arlington, that 300,000-person city with no public transit in a metropolitan area with probably the worst public transit among all the world cup host cities (ok, maybe that's KC)
nice to see the new public plaza at fairbank station with people in it...and stalls for vendors seem to be appearing! this is good public space paired with new transit in an outer part of the city that generally has neither. happy to see it far outside downtown.
thing is, bus speeds between LA & toronto are comparable. not dismissing speed issues, but the biggest delta between TO & LA is frequency (+integration) of bus+rail. lowering bus wait times region-wide is still the best bang-for-your-buck transit investment out there with quick results. 1/
we continue to live in a timeline where established public transit academia doesn't understand the differing role of a tram and a metro within a cohesive transit system. trams absolutely don't "deliver 90% of the benefits of metros at 10% of their cost", and definitely not in the anglosphere.
on the bright side, i spent the whole game putting up posters for bus lanes and had fun, so i haven't completely lost today. this was the only colombia game i didn't watch lol
it's over for the continent. i no longer care about the world cup 👋 penalties are fake 🥀🥀 see you again in 4 years 💛💙❤️
the best way to help out is by directly donating to a trusted org doing rescue and aid work in venezuela right now^ the second best way is supporting community donation drives sending items over. I've only found active ones in toronto, montréal, vancouver, & edmonton - if you know more, lmk (2)
it's been over a week since venezuela got hit by earthquakes. >30k people are still missing. it's really easy to feel hopeless right now. i've made this post to share how you can help from canada by supporting (1) trusted orgs & (2) local donation drives if you're in canada, pls share :) 🇻🇪🇨🇦 (1)
bus lanes improve accessibility! paratransit vehicles like this one move faster, which is critical as paratransit riders already face longer trip times than those who can use conventional transit. bus lanes also reliably provide a clear curb to deploy a ramp anywhere, unimpeded by street parking.
one of the biggest complaints we fielded from some "local residents" about bus lanes on dufferin and bathurst is that they'd make those streets turn into...bus highways? that they'd be more unsafe? anyways, the quieter safer dufferin street of reality, no longer a 4-lane arterial:
always happy when i see a delivery driver who stops clear of the bike lane. physical separation instead could filter out those drivers who don't, though. paint only works on drivers like these who follow rules.
tough hat-wearing choices today, ended up settling on a compromise 9am-7pm non-beenary 7pm-??: viva colombiaaa
what i was working on at 2am last night: toronto transit pride stickers! find these (and more) at an upcoming TTCriders event 🤭
i came for pedestrianized church, but i stayed to play cornhole. the street is fun!
eating bubble waffle and reminiscing about the brutal autocratic dictatorship that built us the canada line for $100m/km back in late 2000s canada 😔
article pushes for full underground subway, which is unnecessary when a mostly above-ground extension of the ontario line could deliver the same benefits of grade-separated transit more easily with smaller trains. still, jane is lower priority than OL up don mills, or sheppard extensions.
toronto-kingston-ottawa-mtl is still going to be longer than toronto-peterborough-ottawa-mtl, but shorter than the zig-zag all-of-the-above option, and would probably nudge a higher ridership return. in an ideal world we'd just build the red line on this map to keep TO-MTL optimized.
maybe it's just my luck today, but line 5 feels slower on the surface sections west of o'connor that tends to run pretty fast. i wish this line had a little more...consistency. on the bright side, noticeably less time waiting for lights along the full surface section
okay, I'm just gonna post one every time i find one. the comments section is a gem. some people call it out as silly, other american transit professionals are fascinated, some comments were clearly written with AI, and one commenter thought the biggest obstacle is "Americans don't like buses"
fern and i took a community shuttle that runs every 15 minutes to visit lynn valley the other day. there's just so much transit accessible nature. sure, vancouver's geography makes things a little easier, but in many jurisdictions, transit to edge suburbs/towns & nature just doesn't exist.
