The middle of this arc is just both POVs having the worst time ever lmao Anyway

“Three hundred years ago,” she said, tongue tripping over the admittance of how long she’d been asleep, “I ventured into the dwindling woods I once called home and emerged an Eidolon’s chosen. I was one of the last, before the end, and I did not get to enjoy such a privilege for long.”

In truth, she could not recall the particulars of how humanity had taken to the sky, nor her place within it. One moment, she had stood in the epicenter of the field her visions had drawn her to. The next, asleep. Or, not quite asleep. There had been some semblance of consciousness, sap-thick and terribly slow. She had felt the forest all around her, could extend her thoughts to theirs as easily as breathing. She had felt their presence in every tingle of her roots, in each shudder of her boughs. A tree’s memory was not akin to a human’s, though. She could not give shape to her experience if she tried.

“The point is,” she said after a pause, “I was there, at the end of the world. I saw it with my own eyes, for a moment. It was there, once, millions of years before the first humans sprawled across its surface. It will be there still millions of years after us. And I know, more than I know anything else, it is there now.”

Myrtle’s dark eyes narrowed. Sleep hung thick in the stoop of her shoulders and the bags underneath her eyes. She glanced to the burning candle on the dresser, then back to Lili. Then, lips a thin line, she flopped back against the mattress and turned to face the wall. “Good night, Lili.”

Chapter 7 snippet to celebrate

Beyond, the apartment was cloaked in darkness. Over the last year, Lili had learned to navigate the slip of a home in all sorts of light, until she could describe every shadowed lump in detail. Tonight, she stumbled through like a stranger. In a handful of hours, her understanding of this cruel new world had been warped beyond reshaping. She could not shake the sensation of the wrongness in the Spine from her mind.

Myrtle was already in bed, back pressed against the wall, when Lili stepped through the curtain. Her shadow seemed so small in the alcove, worn away as she was by the last round of rations and a factory job that kept her forever smelling of smelted iron. And now rations would come again…

The flickering of a flame caught her attention. The last of her beeswax candles, won after hours of haggling, sat atop the dresser, a nail driven into the column. Her jaw set.

“I thought my candles were not to be used.”

#LGBTQWriteAThon Okay I don't have the word "support" but this snippet gets the vibe across. Or rather, the LACK of community support in this moment.

“Should we talk to Bramble?” Lili asked.

“No point.” Myrtle’s laces gave with a final tug. “He wouldn’t care if the whole complex lit ablaze and trapped us inside of it, so long as the new folks he coaxed in here paid the rent and didn’t complain about the smoke.”

This had quickly become the biggest oddity Lili had encountered upon waking: how selfish people nowadays were. Even in times of struggle, the old world had come together to endure it. A community is as strong as its weakest member, her mother had loved to say. It had fostered within Lili a need to provide for others, even at the cost of herself. Now, no one would look her way unless they could get something out of her. Myrtle alone had been willing to acclimate her to this new existence. Hence the apothecary business now occupying most of their home. Lili had the knowledge and a need to provide, and no one was likely to say no if she could cure what ailed them. Still, she had not yet come to terms with this strange, transactional way of life. She doubted she ever would.

authoralexharvey: It isn't hypocritical in the slightest. What's hypocritical is wanting your art to be valued and paid for and then refusing to do the same for the artists that could make your cover.
Also, you don't have to spend "hundreds". Learn graphic design. Learn to draw. Skill swap with a friend and get a cover in exchange for you doing something. Use a payment plan. Buy a cheap pre-made. You have SO MANY OPTIONS.

ravenbrookbooks: So sorry I am not making the same choices that best align with your sense of morality... but I did the same thing by being gay and not being christian... so at this point AI is just the tip of the iceberg on my list of sins.

Apparently a reoccurring trope in my works is making characters vomit. This is the first time it'll be for [spoilers] though.

“Have a seat,” she said after an awkward pause, gesturing to the dining table she had replaced after her exercises that morning. As Evermina passed, Ahelicia tried not to inhale her rosemary and teakwood smell. The knight enjoyed scenting herself with perfume oils that made Ahelicia’s mouth water. This time, her stomach twisted. Perhaps she was sicker than she had thought.

Too quick to stop it, Ahelicia felt that traitorous tickle in the back of her throat again. She had enough time to bolt for the sink before a weak wave of bile escaped. Well. She wiped a shaking hand over her mouth. At least my tunic was spared this time.

“You really are sick, huh.”

“I–I’m fine.” The lie tasted as foul as the acid she’d just spewed.

Lili crawled into bed and curled herself around Myrtle. Measure by measure, their breathing slowed.

“Tell me a story?” Myrtle asked suddenly.

“Mm? What about?”

Myrtle nestled deeper into her side. “About the world below. What was it like, before the ruin?”

Lili forced her breathing to remain even, though she could not stop the way she stiffened against her lover’s back. She had felt the world’s slow decay, when the Empire had first arrived. How they had blazed through resources and poisoned the soil. Year by year, their impact had worsened, until it seemed there would be no way to reverse the damage. And when it seemed all was uninhabitable, they had taken to the skies, stealing what remained of humanity away with them.

Centuries later, a handful of crumbling islands in the sky were all that was left.

“When I was…” Her throat was tight, but Lili took a breath and forced herself onwards. “Long, long ago, we lived amongst trees so tall they blotted out the sun. A child could spend an afternoon counting their branches and still not finish. It was nicer, then. Warmer.”

Myrtle let out a wistful sigh. “It sounds lovely.”

“It was.”

There is something deeply, DEEPLY disgusting with how just today alone I've received "replies" from MULTIPLE AI accounts who appear to "engage" with anyone talking about solarpunk, cyberpunk, etc. Especially when I talk about my climate anxiety. AI IS PART OF THE PROBLEM.

A reply from an AI bot account. It spouts a bunch of worthless jargon and AI speak that is meant, apparently, to tell me that my climate anxiety and hoping for a repaired earth is not escapism and is "the first move".

It had been a while since she had last thought about her father, she realized as she eventually began to slow. Not out of a lack of care—though she often struggled to reconcile her roiling feelings for him. She had loved him. In a way, he had also loved her. What was love if not the melting and reshaping of a person in your image? Did the factory workers in the Intestines not love the metal they melted and recasted and melted again? Besides, was she not better for it? Lady Renée thought so; why else was the attention she bestowed cast in iron?

Ahelicia paused, the tip of her sword wobbling. No—Lady Renée’s affection and that of Ahelicia’s father were distant cousins at best. Lady Renée was of the Houses. She was a better woman than Ahelicia could ever hope to be. To bestow any attention on Ahelicia at all was better than she ever deserved. Lady Renée’s harsh hand was just and correct, her actions a right bestowed by her station. Ahelicia and her father acted on their lower instincts. He had fallen short, and Ahelicia too fell short now. She could never hope to compare to the esteem of the Houses, though every day she fought to prove herself worthy of the close proximity she found to them.

So anyway how's your morning going?

Hi Patty,

I am going to engage with this email in good faith, though everything about it screams against the contrary. Firstly, to avoid wasting time, I am not the author of Song Noir. I don't know who that author is, nor the content included therein, so I am not the appropriate choice to appear for such a work.

Secondly, and most importantly, I am an author of integrity and as such am staunchly anti-AI of any sort. And when I look up Northwest Book Fair and Media Fest, the website is chock-full of AI graphics and imagery. There are many reasons to be anti-AI in all its forms, and indeed to agree to appear at an event so stuffed with AI work would go against my values as an author, a creative, and as a human being. Suffice to say, I am not interested in attending NBF&MF, and never will unless the organization dedicates itself to human creativity and ingenuity over that of machines that are accelerating the destruction of our earth.

Re-evaluate your principles and prioritize human creation again, and actually research the authors you reach out to. Only once you do so will I ever entertain giving you and your events my time of day again.

She undid the ties of one vambrace, then the other. Embossed leather thudded against the floor. “My Lady required me for longer today,” she said as she kicked off her boots. Then, with a playful frown, “I see you didn’t wait for me.”

“Wine is a mistress impossible to say no to.” Despite his words, Samson set his cup down and stretched along the back of his chair with a grunt. Then he rose and crossed the room to her. One hand slid across her shoulders. “But now that you’re here…”

Ahelicia’s heart clenched. There were few things he could be suggesting, none among them worth entertaining at that moment. Her stomach was too upset for alcohol, her mind too weary for conversation, and her body too sore for sex. And yet, drinking and talking and fucking were high on Samson’s short list of interests where Ahelicia was concerned. She tried to think of the last time she had rejected his advance, if doing so again today would upset him, and returned short of an answer.

“Maybe,” she said at last, gaze waltzing around the room. “My head has been bothering me today.” Not entirely a lie; the throbbing in her temples had begun at some point during her walk home and now threatened to grow in intensity.

“Surely, a sip wouldn’t hurt?”
