One's gender identity is decided by the individual. Therefore, that individual is incapable of taking malicious action to disrespect their own gender identity because THEY are themself the arbiter of what their boundaries are around their gender identity.

If someone refers to themself with pronouns that are typically not associated with the gender they are, that ISN'T misgendering, even before we get into the "pronouns are not gender" issue. If a trans person refers to their past self as the gender they were raised as and not the gender they are now, that isn't misgendering. Transmasculine drag queens, transfeminine drag kings, and nonbinary drag artists are not misgendering themself. Transmasculine people who say they experience/have experienced misogyny are not misgendering themselves. Transmasculine or nonbinary people identifying with lesbian culture, especially if they were a part of lesbian circles once, or transfeminine or nonbinary people identifying with gay culture, especially if they were a part of gay circles once, are not misgendering themselves. Transmasculine people in relationships with people who are not normally attracted to men, and transfeminine people in relationships with people who are not normally attracted to women, are not misgendering themselves (their partner MIGHT be misgendering them, but that isn't a given either).

What makes misgendering misgendering is when behaviors, attitudes, words, and so on are extended to a person that contradict their stated gender identity. Because the parameters of a gender identity are up to the person WITH said identity, they inherently cannot fail to meet those parameters.

In fact, I would go so far as to say that accusing a trans person of misgendering themself is inherently a transphobic, paternalistic act that seeks to make the accuser the arbiter of the other's gender identity- that strips them of agency and the right to self-understanding in favor of fitting the accuser's definition of gender. It is a controlling, manipulative act that serves to elevate the accuser's "understanding" of gender and identity above the other person's own identity.

Please stop doing this.
