#Zine month day 19 in the airport: You Act Like Prey is another one by @bibimzines.bsky.social. Certainly an interesting read in public, but I enjoyed the style and presentation immensely. A thoughtful and evocative poem.
Almost missed #Zine month day 19 but I’m counting it anyway. Today is “a stone in the glass” by @whitefoxhats.bsky.social. Another powerful batch of poems but more hopeful than their last set. I enjoyed the number of twisted nature metaphors that made me rethink innocuous items.
#Zine month day 17: Machine God by @bibimzines.bsky.social. It’s a really well presented deep-dive into the effects of AI fueled psychosis, the groups trying to fight against it, and the mechanisms by which our brains can be fooled by an algorithm. Prepare yourselves.
#Zine month day 16 is Armenia + Artsakh by @entangledroots.bsky.social. It’s a well written and concise history of Armenia, the culture, and the modern implications of the genocide. It’s been over 100 years but the culture is still being repressed and denied. Great read.
Day 15 of #Zine month. Went to a funeral today, and happened by chance to grab Mourning Pages I by @hammerandhemlock.bsky.social. Beautiful and heartfelt. Some desperately needed catharsis for a tough day. Thank you.
#Zine month day 14 is CATS I know (I only know 2) by @dinousb.bsky.social! It’s ADORABLE and SILLY and absolutely my vibe today. I needed that little injection of whimsy after a lot of travel and it really helped 💜💜
#Zine month day 13 is apropos of my current trip back to western NY: Screaming and Screaming into the Void by @thatdeafzinester.bsky.social. A raw and personal commentary on the struggles of Deaf/HH people, it’s a good reminder of how easy it is to unintentionally exert privilege.
Tonight’s #Zine had to be a short one for brain reasons. Night 10 is Your Bitter Poison Words by Nik Fuqua: A poem of pain and heartache and anger. It packs a lot of emotion in such a physically small package, and the art emphasizes the almost nightmarish quality of the piece.
Day 9 of #Zine month: Off the Path by Sofia Martin. A really cute comic about a food delivery robot that gets sidetracked. Very relevant to current issues and a much more hopeful take on the automation social issues.
#Zine month day 8 is Sit Crooked and Talk Straight by Ali and @entanged-roots.bsky.social. Powerfully moving and frank, the author pulls no punches in their call to action. The author calls for direct, meaningful intervention in support of those suffering under genocide.
Day 7 of #Zine month: Poetry Notes by @notwolverine.bsky.social. The concept of just publishing your half-finished poems, coarse metaphors and rough rhymes feels really cathartic. “Sometimes, workshopping is overrated.” It reminds me of “perfect is the enemy of done.” Inspiring.
Day 6 of #Zine month is Critical Analysis from Vulnerable Adverbs by @artofmaybe.bsky.social and SOMETIMES. It’s such a weird little experimental thing in all the best ways and I really enjoyed reading it. Commune with Tea is a great poem that will stick with me.
#Zine month day 5 is a vintage pull: “Nonviolent Resistance” by Cecil Hinshaw from 1956. An incredibly idealistic essay on global disarmament, it’s a really interesting window into the political climate, global politics, and anti-Communist sentiment from the era.
Day 4 of #Zine month is “the personal is political” by @centipedekris.bsky.social. Deeply personal and intimate, it’s an autobiographical account of Filipino politics, American colonialism and foreign policy, and the author’s mental health. Tragic and powerful in the best way.
Day 3 of #Zine month is Urban Foraging in Seattle from the Hyperlocal Dispatch group. There’s some really fun tips and recommendations, and a recipe for fruit jam! Also the art quality is wonderful; I’m really enjoying the vibe.
Day 2 of #Zine month is We Butird a Girl by @whitefoxhats.bsky.social. An absolutely brutal and emotionally raw collection of poems; screamed with bloody throat and bleeding heart. I can’t help but feel gut-wrenching sympathy.
Day 1 of #Zine month is Love Bug! by Lonnie Garcia. This book is really cute, and talks about the author’s hobby of keeping pet bugs. The pictures of the praying mantises are really cool, and the jumping spiders are surprisingly cute! Definitely a fun and different perspective.
Got to play constructed #cube again tonight and it was a blast! Went 2-1 on Selesnya D&T/CoCo in some very quick games. Couldn’t fight through the life gain deck, and dumpstered storm and reanimator. #magicthegathering #mtg
Tonight’s read is Cristo Deriso by Centipede Zines (@centipedekris on instagram) paired with Maple Houjicha from @fridaytea.com. It’s an introspective poetry zine about living in Seattle as a migrant and GenZ-er. Some very poignant stuff that really felt personal.
There is a standard legal version of this combo but it’s more mana expensive.
#Cube draft report time! We drafted the wizards keep house cube again, but 3 person Winston draft this time. I got an early Myr Battlesphere, and ended up drafting a dedicated ramp deck with some good top-end beaters. Standout was definitely Sevinne’s Reclamation + Steve. #mtg #magicthegathering
Got to see Electric Callboy in Seattle and it was awesome! They absolutely made a whole show out of it with multiple acts, a techno breakdown, acoustic covers, the works. Would absolutely go again tomorrow if they had a second show.
#cube draft report time! We got to draft a brand new Final Fantasy cube today. A fun mix of the core final fantasy draft set, some choice commander cards, pieces from the bonus sheet, and some custom reskins to help the weaker archetypes. Ended up drafting RW equipment #mtg #magicthegathering
#cube night draft report! Tonight was the Wizard’s Keep store cube: a relatively simple cube with some straightforward synergy pieces for new cubers. We only had 4 people so we did pick 2 draft. I ended up in a rakdos Aggro sacrifice deck after first picking Inti. #mtg #magicthegathering
Tonight’s draft was @joshthemosh.bsky.social Constructed Cube! For those who don’t know, this is a cube where you draft a playset of each card and then build a 60 card deck with a 15 card sideboard. I drafted 4 color living end with 8 cascade cards and 20 creatures that evoke or cycle for value.
Ran Once More into the Void by Rae Nedjadi & published by @genesisoflegend.bsky.social this weekend and it was a blast. First super narrative game that got my crunchy trad players asking when the next session would be. Cannot recommend it enough.
