On Sunday, April 25, 1971, youths attempted to re-open access to the park by holding a baseball game there. Five police squad cars and a paddy wagon responded, and arrested 21 youths. The People's Defense Committee promptly mobilized lawyers and bail bondsmen to provide assistance to those arrested. A demonstration of 100 youths was held outside the Royal Oak police station, but the police announced their intention to continue arresting youths who gathered at the park. The city council and police had joined forces to keep their city free from the "freaks" [12]

I’ve seen a few articles on the last iron lung user passing away. Guess what most headlines leave out. She did not die from her polio complications. The cause is directly stated as long covid. She was living a relatively independent life, until she got long covid. This is who you’re hurting.

Martha Lillard, a lifelong Shawnee resident, died of long-haul Covid 19 on June 26, 2026.
She was 78 years old. She was born June 8, 1948, to Thomas M. and Gloria June (Green) Lillard of Shawnee. Her grandparents were Judge John Little and Grace A. (Hilton) Green and Halbert G. and Essie Lee (Harlin) Lillard.
Martha contracted polio in 1953 and from that time slept in an iron lung.

Here’s how I realized I had long covid. I got sick but improved. A month later was Christmas. I did all my usual activities - baking, hosting, good solid walks. On New Year’s Day I collapsed getting out of bed, couldn’t get up for a week, and never, ever got that level of energy back.
