Following on from the previous post of Barns-Graham in her studio with the large 'Levant' painting, currently unlocated, here is a related study - 'Levant Study No.3' from 1954. This one is on an entirely different scale, measuring only 12.7 x 20.3cm and was acquired by the Trust in 2024.
We have previously known of this impressive large 1950s painting, Levant 1953, from a record shot in WBG's records. However the recent further cataloguing of her archive has revealed this wonderful contextual image, with WBG seen here with the work in her Porthmeor Studio in St Ives.
NOW OPEN - Applications for 6-week research residency at the British School at Rome for a Scotland-based artist the time & space develop bold new work. Applicants must be of British or Commonwealth nationality and resident in Scotland. Deadline: 1 May 2026. Details - buff.ly/besMOHK
A final group (for now) of recent finds from WBG's archive of 35mm slide records of her work. Here we go back to 1942 and three 'Grey Days' in St Ives, certainly appropriate for Edinburgh today, and possibily St Ives too?
Following on from our previous post, 3 more rarely seen WBG works recovered in full (if unverified!) colour from the artist's archive of 35mm slide record shots. These 3 works from 1966-71, similarly to the previous post's works using circles, here WBG uses squares to create movement and energy.
We have recently been methodically going through and scanning the 35mm slides that WBG kept to record her works, recent discoveries include these three gems, all from 1971, when WBG would use circles and ellipses (and also squares) as the vehicle for colour and movement across the picture surface.
2026 will see 2 major WBG shows - the 1st in June at Museum Belvedere, Heerenveen, Netherlands, will be her first major show outside the UK - buff.ly/UyODvdN. In Oct Tate St Ives will then host 1st ever full WBG retrospective (the previous one in 1989 was 15 years before she died) - buff.ly/qmVh0rR
