Author of fictions and strong leisure-time opinions. My Wings Rising epic fantasy duology is from Meerkat Press. I also write horror, funny sci-fi, and maybe essays soon. Food & Drink Blog @ TheGourmez.com. 📍Bay Area, CA
Recent Read: The Outline of History, H.G. Wells. Well worth the effort! It's a great overview of how cultures have been invaded, combined, flourished, grown stagnant, been invaded again and so on through many millennia. Always good to remember, especially during the current American Imperialism era.
Delighted to talk publishing, barrel-aged cocktails, and the restorative power of a döner kebab with @megelison.bsky.social last night! Do be sure to check out her new book, Foundling Fathers, starring the founding fathers brought back to life by tech bros as modern-day teenagers. Book tour ongoing!
17! Sometime in July in the year 2009, Mazu was born in a barn in North Carolina. She's a year into chemo treatment for small cell lymphoma and doing pretty good. Her arthritis pain is the hardest to manage, but as long as she gets daily walks around the yard and sunshine naps, we're all happy.
I ordered a collection of cards from Oddfellow Creations, featuring the papercraft of Xander Odell. They are so intricately and beautifully made, and I can't wait to start sending them out. And at $5 a card, or 4 for $18, they're a deal! Support artisans whenever you can.
This makes me laugh, because it's so the San Francisco of today. A large, Burning Man art installation by Marco Cochrane above a Waymo parking lot.
For some reason, this Reader's Digest cover really amuses me. What a world we live in now. 🫠
Nonstop fireworks in the East Bay for the last hour. How long will it go? Who knows. 🤷🏼♀️ I enjoy the adventure of guessing where the next display will come from.
My all time fave shot is this one from the Nevada Falls trail. Still haven't been up in the Toulomne area at all—seems like the campgrounds are always shut down, and I am not a backpacker. You've made me want to go more!
@maggietokudahall.bsky.social Just in case you need a floor mop of a pigeon for inspiration. 😂
It feels like a day when we need some beauty shared around. So have a picture of the swamps outside of New Orleans, back in 2012. 📷#landscape #photography
I've been meaning to try Pyro's pastrami for years, but it is hard to find a pop-up during their pandemic shifts. 😅 They are now based at Krispy Joe's Coffee in Oakland and making delicious sandwiches like this pastrami, egg, and cheese. I splurged to add the hot cherry peppers. Delicious & fresh. 🍽️
My cat Bemo, victorious, after reclaiming a dead mouse from a neighbor cat who tried to steal it, hopping a fence. I didn't even see Bemo leave the yard, but she came back around half an hour later and dropped the mouse's corpse on the lawn. Her mouse. Hers.
Required stop leaving Santa Cruz! A double jr. cone at Marianne's: chocolate orange and licorice! 😋
I always forget that Taqueria Vallarta takes the "super" in super taco seriously. 😂
They Will Kill You: Funnest horror film I've seen yet this year. Inventive action scenes, exceptional lead actor in Zazie Beetz, an immortal cult, and a pig with a lot of charisma. Worth the watch if you enjoy your horror stylized and with a healthy dose of absurdity. #filmsky
Visited Sulphur Creek Animal Reserve in Hayward with my stepfather for the first time! It's pretty small, but good to see the birds and wildlife healing up! #eastbay
My dahlia plant skipped last year's season, but is reporting for duty this year. I'm thrilled. 🏵️🌱
Recent reads: The Escapement by Lavie Tidhar. Colossi fight shadow monsters, clowns are the native peoples, and physics always shift in a world connected to our own. But at its heart, this is a story of a parent coming to terms with his child's terminal illness. A satisfying and fun fantasy quest.
