Thank you to career prosecutor Brenda Hollis for this important statement. The quest for justice should never be conflated with a single individual. Behind Karim Khan there was a team of professionals seeking accountability in the Palestine investigation. #ICC
Thanks to NBC for the chance to discuss Mayor Mamdani's comments & the broader significance of an ICC arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu on charges of the war crime of starvation and crimes against humanity including murder.
Why this is an own goal & a waste of diplomatic resources that has failed when tried before: www.justsecurity.org/147012/trump...
Sotomayor points out that the majority, by effectively overturning Sosa, forecloses ATS claims even for genocide
Looking forward to moderating this conversation today, especially in relation to the ILC’s work on immunity for state officials accused of genocide.
My latest update to the @justsecurity.org #pressfreedom tracker is live & showing “a small but noticeable increase in resistance to attacks on press freedom by media outlets, coinciding with a growing number of losses by the Trump administration in court.” www.justsecurity.org/112792/trump...
Just back from “Courtroom 34” in Stockholm district court where former CEO of Lundin Oil, Ian Lundin’s lawyers finished their second day of closing arguments, defending him against criminal complicity in war crimes charges.
“Thank you for the trust you’ve placed in me. Now let’s get to work.” - @oonahathaway.bsky.social as incoming President of @asilorg.bsky.social
So proud to be here as a faculty member for the 30th anniversary celebration of the @auwcl.bsky.social War Crimes Research Office
A thread with gratitude to @mashagessen.bsky.social @nytimes.com for covering the corporate complicity verdict against LaFarge this week & for the chance to discuss how corporate enabling (incl., now, by BigTech) is key to preventing mass atrocities. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2026/04/17/o...
Excited for this discussion of Your Data Will Be Used Against You by @profferguson.bsky.social with @brennancenter.org ‘s @rlevinsonwaldman.bsky.social
This is vile. No one needs a lawyer to tell them this is illegal. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment no matter your politics. The U.S. Congress, the American public, U.S. military, U.S. allies or former allies. We need each & every one of you to call him back from the brink.
As this news breaks this morning, please read: www.justsecurity.org/132180/us-ir... TL;DR= This is illegal
I just completed Maui Nui! Today’s highlights were the Mama & baby whale in the channel and the 2 enormous sea turtles that welcomed me towards shore after 3 days and 50km of swimming. Plus we’ve raised nearly $10K for Pono Legal! Immense gratitude to all (save, perhaps, the jellyfish).
Good morning everyone! It’s a beautiful 5.30am here as I get ready to swim the ‘Au’au channel in the Pacific Ocean. Allergic reaction to all the jellyfish stings over the past 2 days is suboptimal but otherwise everything looks great. A huge thank you to everyone who has been supporting this effort.
Start of Day 1 & end of Day 2. I’ll attempt the third channel tomorrow!
We got the tracker working again so if you want to follow tomorrow, I’ll be starting around 11.30am EST : lnkd.in/enMf9_Kx
Everything you need to know about the state of the WashPo editorial side in one headline
So it seems we’re done with head of state immunity in domestic courts (exactly where it was designed for) even as we fight for it tooth and nail at an international court? Actually, we’re probably just done with it in US courts.
It's not too late to register! Join @rlswrites.bsky.social @jessicalwaters.bsky.social & me @americanuniversity tonight for what promises to be an illuminating conversation, traversing criminal law, judicial ethics & reproductive rights, with NYT Magazine staff writer Emily Bazelon. Details below:
Settling in for an extended airport stay. I am thanking each TSA worker I meet for showing up. The last guy I spoke to said he’d saved 2 months worth of wages in anticipation of this - but he’s out of luck if they go to a 3rd month.
I'm thrilled to announce that we'll be bringing Emily Bazelon to American University on Nov. 12! Register to join us for what promises to be a fascinating & wide-ranging conversation about the state of criminal law, lawyers & judges in this moment. @rlswrites.bsky.social @jessicalwaters.bsky.social
Stage is set for my panel @adaptation futures.bsky.social to discuss Pacific-led ITLOS & ICJ advisory opinions on climate #YearofClimate in International Courts
One of the wonderful things about @adaptationfutures.bsky.social 2025 is the number of breakout sessions & peer learning opportunities that have been built into the programming.
So grateful to be in Aotearoa with former #Fulbright colleagues to present at Adaptation Futures 2025. Loss & damage from a Pacific perspective panel underway now.
Full house here @auwcl.bsky.social to hear @leilasadat1.bsky.social discuss Crimes Against Humanity from the slave trade onwards.
