The idea sparks in Olruggio's mind over the most mundane thing. He catches Qifrey, idling next to him at a little gathering, with the ribbon of his hat tassel pressed between his fingers. He skates over it, sliding the pad of his thumb up and down the silky fabric, while clearly listening intently to what's being said at the table. Then, as if he's been doing it for years (and maybe he has, maybe Olruggio simply never noticed) he brings it to his mouth and presses it to his lips. He leaves it there for a bit, lower lip pouted out a little, until finally lowering it to pick up his glass of tea and take a sip.

He's been told by now what the ribbon really means; the promise, the pact, the last thread of Qifrey's sanity at times. And he knows how dearly Qifrey holds it, how when he'd tried to offer it back when all was said and done he looked so utterly soggy that Olruggio couldn't stand it. He hadn't planned on taking it back before then but after there was no way.

He wants to test it before it goes in for the biggest idea he has, of course. One never jumps feet first into their new projects, even if they think they will work! They have to move forward with knowledge that Olruggio currently isn't sure he has.

So, he starts with something small and easy to write off as playful and unserious. He grabs Qifrey's hand gently one evening when he's fiddling with the ribbon, wrapped around his finger and pressed to his lips, and presses a kiss over the same spot. Qifrey can't see it very well, of course, but he knows the feeling of Olruggio's lips on his skin.

He freezes, lip quivering briefly, and then nudges his hand against Olruggio's mouth in a silent request. Again? Of course. Olruggio presses another kiss to the spot, smiling, and marks that down mentally as a good sign.

When Olruggio gets back from the market that day with a box of stone-husk walnuts he's more than a little pleased with himself. They're out of season, not to mention rare in these parts anyway, but he got a good deal on the little wooden chest of them and he knows it's been a while since Qifrey had any. Usually, he snacks on them whenever he can hunt them down but they'd been particularly rare this year; all the more reason he's excited about the buy.

But when he sets the crate down and lets Qifrey open it the expression he gets is a bit more… reluctant than he's expecting. Qifrey's smile wavers into a little wobbly frown, brows pulled together, and he rolls one of the objects from the box in his hand and speaks to Olruggio hesitantly.

"How much did you pay for these?" he asks.

Ah, just expenses? "Not much," Olruggio says, stepping around the counter to lean against Qifrey's side, arm wrapping around his waist comfortably. "I got a good deal."

Qifrey relaxes some. He turns his body into him to nuzzle against Olruggio's neck and he leans his head back in response, giving more room for Qifrey to press against his pulse.

"Oh dear," Qifrey sighs, turning his face to rub his cheek against Olruggio's cloak. "I'm afraid I have a secret to tell you."

There are no real, serious secrets between them anymore. Beyond little white lies to surprise each other, they avoid any and all deception now. Olruggio knows that Qifrey hates when he shaves his beard so now he just trims it down for summer. Qifrey knows that Olruggio can't stand when he puts his cold toes on the backs of his knees so he wears socks to bed. They're beyond hurt feelings about minor issues; to know the truth is worth that.

So the next words out of Qifrey's mouth do not upset Olruggio but they do confuse him.

"I hate walnuts," he says—almost a whisper where he's pressed his face against Olruggio's shoulder.
