Another reminder to my Portland area friends that I’ll be playing a se for Milwaukie porchfest this Friday at 6:30 on my stoop! Snacks and drinks provided!
I’m playing a set this Friday (the 17th) on my front stoop for Milwaukie Porchfest. Should be a lot of fun. It’s at 6:30. Might start a bit early. I will have snacks and drinks for those in attendance! If you can’t make the first one I’m playing a second one on the 31st.
Lindsey got me a “World’s Best Dad” mug for Christmas and I feel pressure to step up my parenting game if I drink out of it while my son is looking at me.
I’ve blocked two people in as many days because they quote posted me with an astoundingly uncharitable interpretation of pretty anodyne statements. It’s satisfying to truly believe I don’t owe an aggressive stranger an argument or even a second of my time.
It’s 2026 and we have the technology to make drone shows but we’re still doing the big sky explosions thing that triggers both vets and pets? I thought we almost all respected and/or loved those two demographics. I think it’s time to move on; it’s been 250 years.
I did paddington bear fan art for my son on his doodle board and I’m drawing some Chris Stapleton fan art for myself on my IPad. Here’s a WIP shot:
When we first bought our house (in 2016) it was a huge leap, and my main gig fell apart pretty quickly after we signed the papers, so Commissions became our lifeline. I got a request to do a "There Will Be Blood" Triptych of three specific scenes depicting Daniel Plainview and his son. Pretty good!
Building my website and found these old Dark Crystal covers in my archives. I was impressed by the efforts by my past self! I like the wave guy.
I was going back through old folders while building my new website and, wow, I was not holding back on commissions in 2017:
Musician commissions very close to all being done. Tyler Childers complete with his on stage beverage caddy.
An illustration for the "about me" section of the website I'm building. I just like herons, cool-looking moths and a good winsor & newton series 7 number 2 brush.
I settled on a landing image for my website. I've drawn my favorite animal sporting a wreath of triumph which I've awarded the species for being the most beautiful AND grotesque beach monsters. It's a little absurd but drawn seriously. If I have an consistent aesthetic that would be it :)
Musician commission number 10. Miles Davis depicted in his “hard bop era” for @docshaner.bsky.social. Trumpets are hard to draw but I tried hard because I knew this piece was going to an artist I particularly admire.
Musician commission number nine (for real: I counted this time.) The purple pride of Minnesota. One of a kind.
My son has a little picture book called "ROAR" given to him by my brother. The colors are over the top and they've grown on me so I decided to color the last porchfest poster with a similar palette. I wanted it to feel like a kid's playset or those holographic marvel cards:
I colored in my Porchfest flying V poster. I decided to keep a largely similar palette to my cartoon Bing Cherry guy. I wanted it to feel sweet and homey like my own experience of Milwaukie, OR.
Last of the three porchfest designs. We have a lot of geese here in town and they like to fly in a V formation so it almost drew itself…
Here is the second porchfest design. I wanted it to have a simcity kind of vibe. I drew a caricature of my own house over the O
The Milwaukie Arts committee (I’m newly vice chair!) asked me to draw three posters for our upcoming porchfest; the rest of the members liked more than one sketch so… This is the first one.
Nice thing is that I had a great dad. He raised me, taught me that there are many versions of masculinity that don’t depend on diminishing others and that art can be infused in every aspect of life. He’s been gone 25 years but I still use things he showed me every day. He’s my still my hero.
Oof. Mother’s Day is rough for many of us. I’m not going to get into detail but I had a call with my mom today and it was genuinely disturbing. Good luck to the rest of you with *complicated* moms.
Dizzy is finished. I think this is musician commission number 7. Trumpets are hard as hell to draw. I’m guessing I’ll hear about any glaring mistakes from my buddy @panuzasny.bsky.social
An older piece. I used to just draw stuff like this before I got super busy doing NDA corporate illustration work. I feel very lucky to have good and consistent work but I miss making my own stuff just because.
May 4th obligatory post. I watched the 1st season of "The Mandalorian" with my son yesterday when he as feeling sick and cranky and it holds up. Good stuff. I really wish they had realized what they had. Commission from a few years ago:
Still working through the musician commissions. The guitar I wanted, that originally prompted me to open up the slots, got bought out from underneath me. I apparently called five minutes after it sold. The good news is that I've been putting the money towards singing lessons and it's been amazing.
