JUMP LEADS SEASON 2 OUT NOW! Writer, podcaster, comedian, former world-record speedrunner, u̶n̶o̶f̶f̶i̶c̶i̶a̶l̶ Worms historian. Jump Leads, Good Chaotic, The Game of Rassilon. Non-binary, they/them.
Hey, Amazon? Why the heck are you using very old, never-used-in-any-official-capacity logo for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine?
285. Diablo I remember the demo for this being included with… something? Maybe the Sold Out Software release of WarCraft: Orcs & Humans. It was fun, and introduced me to the genre, but it never quite pulled me in all the way. I bought D2 and 3 for the Switch, but never spent much time with either.
284. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune I was mesmerized by this when it first came out for the PS3. It felt like a 3D version of Flashback. I tried coming back to it last weekend, and it just didn't hold up.
283. Worms Pinball This actually refers to two different games - there's Worms Pinball on the PS1 (also available on PS4/PS5) that is a port of Addiction Pinball, and there's Worms Pinball on the PC (available via Steam) and only features the Worms table from that game.
Every now and then, someone posts a TNG screen test photo of Patrick Stewart in a wig. The only problem: no such screen tests occurred. Stewart auditioned in a wig, but never screen tested with one. The photo comes from the set of the episode "Violations", where he wears a wig in a flashback.
282. Terraria Adored this game. Spent years exploring one generated world. Never quite managed to reach endgame, mostly because… well, I was exploring. At lot. Loved it, kind of miss playing it.
281. Minecraft I don't know anyone who plays Minecraft the way I do, which is to generate a new world every time I start the game and just… go for a walk through it. I almost never play the same world twice, and I have no goal other than to just walk and see it.
280. Quik the Thunder Rabbit The CD32 was a new console, so naturally there was a brief landgrab for the console's mascot. Quik was… one of them? Maybe? This game answers the question: What if Sonic a) wasn't that fast, and b) could die of hunger or thirst mid-game? Great intro though.
279. Lemmings (PSP) I was so excited to learn that one of my favorite games was being remade by one of my favorite studios. And they sent me a free copy! I think they did a decent job, though the animation for the Lemmings themselves was a little stiff. Don't know that I ever finished this one.
278. The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition I remember knowing in my bones that Monkey Island was done and was never coming back. Then LucasArts announced Monkey Island: Special Edition. An imperfect but nevertheless wonderful and deeply emotionally significant remaster of a game I adore.
277. Worms Open Warfare 2 It may sound silly but the difference between the PSP version, which Team17 developed in-house, and the DS version, which was developed by Two Tribes using a different game engine, makes this feel like a real retro throwback to a time when ports could be wildly divergent.
It's always bothered me that the PS1 and Dreamcast versions of Worms World Party still use one of the menu elements from Worms Armageddon on the Deathmatch screen. There isn't an equivalent graphic in the PC version, so I think it just got overlooked when they were retooling the frontend.
276. Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland Genuinely amazing that a) a Rugrats game came out in 2024, b) the lead development platform was the NES, and c) it's absolutely one of the best NES platformers ever made. I can't recommend this game enough. Just astounding work.
Not much of a soccer person, and I'm not particularly fond of my hometown (it has its merits, chief among them being an international airport that allows people to leave it at speed), but I do own this shirt because a) it fits me better than most shirts I own, and b) it's deeply funny.
275. Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee I was excited about this one when it was first announced, then it got snatched up as an Xbox exclusive. Was it a launch game? I forget. When it finally got a PC release I played it for, I think, 30 minutes. None of the charm from the PS1 games was there. A pity.
274. ALIEN Fish Finger Cracking little Amiga platformer with great physics. Played this a LOT as a kid. It's still available to buy today as charity-ware - you just have to make a donation to the developer's charity of choice: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/...
273. SimAnt Where do you go after making a city simulator? You be a ant. I had a lot of fun with this game as a kid, and I absolutely could not tell you what I did or why.
272. Full Throttle I've never played it. I've never even come across a copy in the wild - it's one of the only Lucasarts adventure games, along with Loom, that I never got to hold a physical copy of. I didn't even learn it existed until maybe 15 years ago. I'll get around to it one day.
271. Morph Fiendishly difficult puzzle-platformer from the same studio that made James Pond. I got incredibly stuck on this and never finished it. Maybe worth revisiting 28 years later?
"Hey, you know what these fun, quirky cartoon characters need? Real human teeth!" - Ubisoft, for some reason
270. Rayman Origins Probably the best Rayman game - I hold it much higher regard than Legends - and almost certainly one of the best 2D platformers of its era.
269. Doom 3 It's not a bad game. It's not a GOOD one. But it is, for better or worse, a game I keep returning to. I don't think I enjoy it, but I don't hate it. There's SOMETHING in there. Even if it is just, I dunno, twelve-dozen lazy jumpscares.
Here's the title screen. You'll notice the background is a) wider, and b) differently placed compared to the version on the box art.
The original box art looks like this. We know the artwork is cropped, because a fullsize version is used on the menu screen for the game. I'm pretty sure the WormsDC art has separate layers for the background and the worm in the foreground, which was also the case with the original Worms art.
268. Among Us This was a ton of fun during lockdown, right up until people started coming up with silly meta rules that made playing the game much less fun. But I have a lot of fond memories of this one. I am NOT a good imposter.
267. Sheep I remember seeing this game covered on some TV gaming show or another (I want to say it was Gamepad, but that feels way too late). It looked so cool and I really wanted to play it. Ended up picking it up for the PS1 on sale at Blockbuster Video. Loved this game!
266. Donkey Kong Country Returns The joke I made when this first came out for the Wii was that this game would actually be enjoyable as soon as they released the inevitable remaster that removed the motion controls. I got my wish not once but twice - on the 3DS and the Switch. Great game!
