As one of his first initiatives, Maley gave incentives so residents would convert duplex and triplexes back into single-family homes. Called "Glad to Be Single Again," the program offered financing at below-market rates, as well as deferred loan payments for residents willing to renovate.

The political committee aligned with Pace-O-Matic, Operators for Skill, has contributed $70,000 to Williams’ campaign account since last year, records show. Williams, the top Democrat on a Senate panel that oversees gambling, said he developed his policy position before receiving that campaign money. He noted he has also received contributions from casino interests.

“I don’t get a contribution and then decide to support something,” he said. “I’ve never done that.”

Despite the electoral setbacks, Pace-O-Matic has maintained support among a broad cross-section of lawmakers — from State Sen. Anthony H. Williams, a Philadelphia Democrat, to Yaw, the Lycoming County Republican — who point to the revenue skill games generate for small businesses.

“We signed up to protect the small-business owner, and in this time when everybody talks about affordability, I can’t afford a 52% tax,” Williams said at the recent rally, referring to the governor’s proposal.

He and Yaw have sponsored legislation backed by the industry that would impose the $500 monthly fees on game terminals. In an interview, Williams said the bill would reduce the number of skill games operators in his community “significantly” and ensure proper regulation, adding that he was concerned about locations that offer games in addition to selling liquor by the drink and loose cigarettes.

In Graduate Hospital, Grays Ferry and Point Breeze, Census data shows that the median household income more than doubled from $47,800 between 2010 and 2014 to $96,900 between 2020 and2024. A 2023 Reinvestment Fund report found that long-term residents in these neighborhoods face some of the greatest risk of involuntary displacement citywide.

What Parker is up against is less a fair-minded assessment of her record than the rise of a performative progressivism more concerned with symbols than outcomes. Democratic Socialists like Rabb, and mayors including New York’s Zohran Mamdani, Chicago’s Brandon Johnson and Seattle’s Katie Wilson may all prove to be governance-challenged. But as a political movement, the Democratic Socialists of America and Working Families Party is having a moment.

Immediate neighbors brought up issues such as drainage and vehicle entrances and exits. They suggested that single homes would be preferable and questioned whether the twins would sell for such a
high price.
The developers, who bought the property four years ago, can build warehouses by right.
One woman cautioned that houses might be preferable due to the possibility of trucks driving in and out of a warehouse site.
